Cannabis Combats Alzheimer’s Disease – Study

Cannabis Combats Alzheimer's Disease

SOURCE Cannabis, a safe anti-inflammatory that slows brain aging can combat the deadly effects of Alzheimer’s Disease a new study details. But cannabis is also considered a Schedule 1 drug with no medical use. Could this new report help alter our government’s perception of pot?Originally published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease the report’s findings “strongly suggest that THC could be a potential therapeutic treatment option for Alzheimer’s disease through multiple functions and pathways,” notes the authors.

Cannabis Combats Alzheimer's Disease“THC is known to be a potent antioxidant with neuroprotective properties, but this is the first report that the compound directly affects Alzheimer’s pathology by decreasing amyloid beta levels, inhibiting its aggregation, and enhancing mitochondrial function,” study author Chuanhai Cao, PhD and a neuroscientist at the Byrd Alzheimer’s Institute and the USF College of Pharmacy says.

Alzheimer’s Disease currently affects more than five million people and that number is likely to only increase until an effective cure is discovered. Journalist David Downs notes that one in three seniors will die with Alzheimer’s or another dementia. He also points out that Alzheimer’s is the sixth leading cause of death in the nation, costing America about $203 billion in 2013.

Cannabis Combats Alzheimer's DiseaseIn his latest article for the Smell the Truth blog he writes that Alzheimer’s Disease is thought to result from a lifetime of brain inflammation and points out that cannabis is one of the most safe anti-inflammatories in medicine. He says some neuroscientists believe a bout of pot smoking in early adulthood may prevent Alzheimer’s onset later in life. Cannabis slows brain aging, Time reported in 2012.

Smoking, vaping, or eating the marijuana molecules THC and CBD directly effects nerve cell function, reducing chronic brain inflammation, oxidative stress, and cellular dysfunction — all the while promoting stability of the human body’s internal environment (homeostasis) and healthy brain cells (neurotrophic support), studies show.

Cannabis Combats Alzheimer's Disease“What we found was that not only did the single puff a day reverse the memory impairment but also restarted neurogenesis,” Ohio State University, Gary Wenk told the Seattle Post Intelligencer this year. Other studies have shown THC inhibits other key pathological markers of Alzheimer’s Disease.

Downs also notes that our government has patented marijuana molecule CBD as a neuroprotectant. And this is the same ruling class that maintains that marijuana is a schedule 1 drug with no medical use and high potential for abuse.

  1. Nancy: “Ronnie! There’s hope for your Alzheimer’s!”
    Ronald: “Huh? I don’t understand?”
    Nancy: “Pot, you know, Marijuana. It’s GOOD for you!”

  2. I have a question that I need answered,,does all cannabis oil have other ingredients like ‘high grade alcohol’? Can u recommend a site where I might look into ‘cbd hemp oil’ or is that just crap?? I really need to know this,,my head is spinning w/all the info that I can’t seem to understand. SIMPLICITY in answers or explanations will do wonders. I’m sure I am not the only idiot out there that seeks this. thx for ur time. L.

    • I don’t know much, so hopefully others will pipe in here and help answer you. One thing to keep in mind is that if done properly, there should be no residue of the alcohol or other solvents left in the final preparation (oil). It would be helpful to know what condition you are trying to treat?

      • ‘Properly done, there should be no residue of the alcohol or other solvents’,,,that is what I was looking for,,,I am trying to ck out ‘cbd hemp oil’ because the person im getting info for gets ‘tested’ at work,,hence the ‘cbd h/oil’,,legal , this is for ‘kidney’ problems. I thank u very much just for answering me…Lola

          • Yes, don’t know the ‘name’ of disease but I do know she has to have a transplant. Dr. said if its legal and it works, go ahead with it. That is why I am seeking ‘cbd hemp oil’ cause it is legal. I live in Tejas and EVERYTHING GOOD is illegal. I am using the ‘h/oil’ and will take a ‘test’ at the end of week to see if it really is ‘legal’. Been taking 1/2 of dropper everynight for 4 nites now,,can’t really tell if ‘anything’ is working…(i’m testing on me first),,I would like to get ‘the real thing’, but like I said sis gets tested @work. I just know ‘cannabis oil’ would do wonders on her. If anything, maybe I could be ‘steered’ in the right direction. lol. thx to all who responded here!! Lola

    • Lola,
      I work with CBD Thera. We sell the only CBD Oil made in America, and tested in America. CBD comes from Hemp. It is the “sister” plant to Marajuana. CBD oil contains no THC (well .001%)
      It is non psychoactive (it doesn’t get you high) This is important for people who work, drive, and may be drug tested.
      I have met hundreds of people whose lives have been changed by CBD oil. If you Google CBD breakthroughs in 2013, you will be amazed at the wide range of afflictions, CBD treats.
      Good luck!

      • Thanks for responding Cindy, went ahead w/good cannabis oil. I bought cbd from co. in Georgia, can’t say it did anything for person I bought it for. I’m guessing its for kids, right? Straight up cannabis oil is working for me and mine…thx again.

  3. Lola – being in a place where everything good is illegal doesn’t leave much wiggle room. Legal CBD is extracted from the Hemp plant. CBD has no mental effects so you will not notice anything. Best to rely on testing to know its potency. CBD is a very healing agent, is not harmful in any way, and should help with the kidney problem. Go for it. ~Dennis

  4. WHY a cannabis medications may slow progression of Alzheimer’s disease?
    See the abstract entitled „Neurodegenerative Diseases and Schizophrenia as a Hyper or Hypofunction of the NMDA Receptors“ presented at „29th World Veterinary Congress“ (Vancouver, 2008), by Josef Hlasny, Czech Republic;
    Neurodegenerative diseases, including BSE, Alzheimer’s disease etc. are caused by different mechanisms but may share a final common pathway to neuronal injury due to the overstimulation of glutamate receptors, especially of the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor subtype. It is generally accepted that the influx of Ca2+ as a result of excessive activation of the NMDA receptor underlies the toxic actions of glutamate in many systems. Also, ammonia intoxication leads to excessive activation of NMDA receptors in brain. On the other hand, Mg2+ competes with Ca2+ at voltage-gated calcium channels both intracellularly and on the cell surface membrane. So, Mg2+ can protect against NMDA-induced neurodegeneration and Ca2+ deficiency can be important about NMDA hypofunction” in schizophrenia. In addition there can be another example about hypoglutamatergic condition; cannabinoids are known to inhibit Ca2+ channels-glutamate release in schizophrenia, and to inhibit progression of certain neurodegenerative diseases.
    There are no scientific references to date in which high intake of crude protein (and potassium) high enough to lead to a state of hyperammonemia (and hypomagnesemia) during the incubation period of the BSE. Therefore there is the first idea of this review; to show the hypomagnesemia plus hyperammonemia ‘simultaneous’ action on the ruminant tissues. So, the various clinical symptoms can be observed because the nervous system controlling both voluntary and involuntary muscles is affected (Mg and Ca disturbances). If the BSE is involved; a longer chronic action of corresponding biochemical changes in the blood (CSF) is necessary to rise irreversible neurodegenerative changes.
    So, I will perform some interpretations about this connection and some details will be presented to the Congress, and also second idea of this review; to show that cannabis use can be a proof about the link between the NMDA receptor hyperfunction (neurodegeneration) and hypofunction (schizophrenia).
    In addition to this abstract;
    1. Synaptic NMDAR activation is neuroprotective, whereas extrasynaptic NMDA receptors trigger neuronal death and/or neurodegenerative processes.
    2. Altered neuronal calcium homeostasis affects metabolism of amyloid precursor protein (APP), leading to increased production of β-amyloid (Aβ), and contributing to the initiation of Alzheimer’s disease (AD).
    3.Chronic activation of extrasynaptic NMDAR promotes leading to neuronal Aβ release, representing a causal risk factor for developing AD.
    4. Reduction of extrasynaptic activity by memantine, a non-competitive NMDAR antagonist, halts Aβ-induced neurotoxicity.
