The Effects of Marijuana Smoke

There are many reasons why marijuana is not worse
for you than smoking cigarettes. You may have heard
that “one joint is equal to ten cigarettes” but this is
exaggerated and misleading. Marijuana does contain more tar
than tobacco — but low tar cigarettes cause just as much
cancer, so what is that supposed to mean? Scientists have
shown that smoking any plant is bad for your lungs, because
it increases the number of ‘lesions’ in your small airways.
This usually does not threaten your life, but there is a
chance it will lead to infections. Marijuana users who are
worried about this can find less harmful ways of taking
marijuana like eating or vaporizing. (Be careful —
marijuana is safe to eat — but tobacco is not, you might
overdose!) Marijuana does not cause cancer the way
tobacco does, though.

Here is a list of interesting facts about marijuana smoking
and tobacco smoking:

o Marijuana smokers generally don’t chain smoke,
and so they smoke less
. (Marijuana is not physically
addictive like tobacco.) The more potent marijuana
is, the less a smoker will use at a time.

o Tobacco contains nicotine, and marijuana doesn’t.
Nicotine may harden the arteries and may be
responsible for much of the heart disease caused by
tobacco. New research has found that it may also
cause a lot of the cancer in tobacco smokers and
people who live or work where tobacco is smoked.
This is because it breaks down into a cancer causing
chemical called `N Nitrosamine’ when it is burned
(and maybe even while it is inside the body as well.)

o Marijuana contains THC. THC is a bronchial dilator,
which means it works like a cough drop and opens up
your lungs, which aids clearance of smoke and dirt.
Nicotine does just the opposite; it makes your lungs
bunch up and makes it harder to cough anything up.

o There are benefits from marijuana (besides bronchial
dilation) that you don’t get from tobacco.
Mainly,
marijuana makes you relax, which improves your health
and well-being. (See also the “protective effect” in video below)

o Scientists do not really know what it is that causes
malignant lung cancer in tobacco. Many think it may
be a substance known as Lead 210. Of course, there
are many other theories as to what does cause cancer,
but if this is true, it is easy to see why no case of lung
cancer resulting from marijuana use alone has
ever been documented
, because tobacco contains
much more of this substance than marijuana.

o Marijuana laws make it harder to use marijuana
without damaging your body
. Water-pipes are illegal
in many states. Filtered cigarettes, vaporizers, and
inhalers have to be mass produced, which is hard to
arrange `underground.’ People don’t eat marijuana
often because you need more to get as high that way,
and it isn’t cheap or easy to get (which is the
reason why some people will stoop to smoking leaves.)
This may sound funny to you — but the more legal
marijuana gets, the safer it is
.

It is pretty obvious to users that marijuana prohibition
laws are not “for their own good.” In addition to the
above, legal marijuana would be clean and free from
adulterants. Some people add other drugs to marijuana
before they sell it. Some people spray room freshener on it
or soak in in chemicals like formaldehyde! A lot of the
marijuana is grown outdoors, where it may be sprayed with
pesticides or contaminated with dangerous fungi. If the
government really cared about our health, they would form an
agency which would make sure only quality marijuana was
sold. This would be cheaper than keeping it illegal, and it
would keep people from getting hurt and going to the
emergency room. [Source]

FACT: Studies have shown that smoking marijuana does NOT increase your chance of getting cancer and may even lower it slightly! Of course, vaping or eating cannabis are still considered the safest methods of ingestion especially for daily consumers.

“Early on, when our research appeared as if there would be a negative impact on lung health, I was opposed to legalization because I thought it would lead to increased use and that would lead to increased health effects,” Tashkin says. “But at this point, I’d be in favor of legalization.
Tobacco smoking causes far more harm.   And in terms of an intoxicant, alcohol causes far more harm.

UCLA’s Tashkin studied heavy marijuana smokers to determine whether the use led to increased risk of lung cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD. He hypothesized that there would be a definitive link between cancer and marijuana smoking, but the results proved otherwise.

“What we found instead was no association and even a suggestion of some protective effect,” says Tashkin, whose research was the largest case-control study ever conducted.

(Listen to Tashkin’s full interview here)

UPDATE

A new study, published in January 2012 Journal of the American Medical Association, tested the lung function of over 5,000 young adults between 18 and 30. After 20 years of testing, researchers found some buzzworthy results: regular marijuana smokers (defined by up to a joint a day for seven years) had no discernible impairment in lung activity from non-smokers.

In fact, researchers were surprised to find marijuana smokers performed slightly better than both smokers and non-smokers on the lung performance test. Why? The most likely explanation seems to be that the act of inhaling marijuana—holding each puff in for as long as possible—is a lot like a pulmonary function test, giving marijuana smokers an edge over their cigarette smoking counterparts.

For most of human existence, cannabis has been considered a medicine. Queen Victoria used it to alleviate her menstrual cramps. Extracts were prescribed by doctors and available at every pharmacy in the U.S. According to Fast Food Nation author Eric Schlosser, attitudes toward cannabis only shifted when Americans began to notice and object to its use by immigrants around the turn of the 20th century. • I think pot should definitely be legalized. When people say “It kills your brain cells” it makes me want to punch them in the face. I’m probably one of the smartest people in my graduating class and I smoke pot whenever I can (which is not very often). I personally have a pretty wild high. I act a bit crazy, but afterwards I’m all chill and relaxed. Pot may make “some” people less serious and less motivated, but that all depends on if you were motivated in the first place. It’s just an act of laziness in my opinion. I have been smoking marijuana for almost 4 years and have never had any symptoms that have made me want to consider quitting. I have been smoking cigarettes on-and-off for about 2 years but have been excessively smoking cigarettes for about 3 months and I have had pain in my chest countless times, nausea, and headaches. I’m really considering just smoking marijuana in place of cigarettes. The taste and smell is much more appealing as well, as if that matters.

        • It matters… Not only does second hand cigarette smoke cause cancer, but third hand as well – that’s the smell that sticks on ones clothes and hair after being around someone smoking. This is most assuredly not the case for cannabis – so help others cure rather than get cancer by switching!!

        • hi Heather,
I use to smoke pot to get high and relax since I am always hyper and there are times I can’t focus, anxiety(I don’t take dangerous pills). I am 51 now and wish I could smoke again, but the last incident was scary to me; I felt claustrophobic, panicky and hyperventilate, so I stopped and that was 25 years ago.
Marijuana has it’s benefits to help those with ADD/ADHD, epilepsy, cancer, HIV, AIDS, Asthma/COPD, eating disorders (anorexic/bulimia), depression/bipolar.
I wish they legalize marijuana for people who really need it.

I understand the panic thing, for me it’s enclosed spaces and any crowd situation. For me they were both brought on by traumatic events. When consuming marijuana my wife and I both get very paranoid so we only imbibe in a situation where we don’t have to deal with the outside world intruding on us. You may want to give it another try under those conditions, it works for us and it might work for you.

            • Smoking marijuana high in CBD and low in THC helps with things like anxiety and such but cannot cause paranoia simply because it has exactly the opposite effect. CBD doesn’t help with pain though, so using a blend that is a close ratio of THC and CBD will help with the pain and prevent the anxiety that THC can cause. I use CBD twic a day, THC once a day, and have never suffered from anxiety or paranoia. The CBD also prevents the jittery feeling caffeine causes me. YMMV

              • Thanks for this, very interesting. One interesting thing to note, in the UK when they came out against their version of “skunk weed”, saying it was linked to schizophrenia and other mental issues, they were actually talking about Cannabis that had been bred to have no CBD. CBD is what calms the effects of THC, like you said. So they tried to bad mouth cannabis based on this, when in actuality, it was human intervention that was to blame – and is cannabis void of CBD actually cannabis? Is an orange modified to have no vitamin c still an orange?

I used to think THC was more powerful in many ways, than CBD. Like you said. For pain relief, as well as killing cancer cells, helping inflammation, muscles spasticity, etc. But Dr David Bearman, one of the top leaders in the movement for medical cannabis, swears that CBD is as powerful a healer as THC in every measurable way (according to the science). Very impressive if true.

            • According to Lester Grinspoon, who studied marijuana for the US government for over 30 years, and was professor emeritus at Harvard,

…the cannnabis-causes-psychosis line is disproved by the absence of “even a blip in the in-cidence of schizophrenia in the US aftermillions of people started smoking mari-juana in the 1960s.” The prevalence of schizophrenia in adults is about 1%worldwide and seemingly independentof whether or not cannabis use is wide-spread in a given country.A meta-analysis published in the
              Lan-cet
in 2004 (Macleod, et al) stated, “Can-nabis use appears to have increased sub-stantially amongst young people over thepast 30 years, from around 10% report-ing ever use in 1959-70, to around 50%reporting ever use in 2001 in Britain andSweden. If the relation between use andschizophrenia were truly causal and if the relative risk was around five-fold,then the incidence of schizophreniashould have more than doubled since1970. However, population trends inschizophrenia incidence suggest that in-cidence has either been stable or slightlydecreased over the relevant time period.”

One thing that helps is to keep in mind the fact that cannabis causes a temporary rise in heart rate, comparable to mild exercise like shoveling snow. The heart rate rises a little while after smoking and then subsides. If people can remember that this is a normal process, once it happens they will not think of it as “fear” (which feels exactly the same – heart rate rises) but a normal and actually healthy effect of cannabis use – it increases circulation.

I just role a joint and keep it on me when i get that urge i just go find some place i can smoke and after i finish that joint i am one for the next 6 hours with out even thinking about a cigarette. After about a year i didn’t even think about cigs anymore i smoked marijuana when i wanted to and had no more urges. So if you have not yet quit then i suggest you do so.

The smell profile of Marijuana smoke is 16 times more potent then tobacco. There are 33 naturally occurring agents in Marijuana (not including the potential for poisons and carcinogenic fertilizers that may have been used in the growing cycle of the plant.) If people are so sure that it is medicinal in nature then why not take it orally in pill form? Other then glaucoma treatment, the smoke of the Marijuana plant has not been shown to be therapeutic. So you could easily lose any of the cancer causing risks by ingesting a tablet.

At 117 she quit smoking (by that age she was just smoking two or three cigarettes per day because she was blind and was too proud to ask often for someone to light her cigarettes for her). But she resumed smoking when she was 118 because, as she said, not smoking made her miserable and she was too old to be made miserable. She also said to her doctor: “Once you’ve lived as long as me, only then can you tell me not to smoke.” Good point! [USA Today, “Way to go, champ,” 10/18/95].

When Mme. Calment died at 122 in l997, the new longevity champ became 116-year-old Marie-Louise Meilleur, of Canada. Mme. Meilleur had chain-smoked all her adult life (as her grandson said, “She always had a cigarette dangling from her lips as she worked,”–AP, 8/15/97, reported in Miami Herald, p. 2A). She did give up smoking, however, when she was nearly 100.

The tar builds up just like cigarets, and the same thing happens, LUNG CANCER. (I have witnessed this happen to people who I have seen smoke pot, and nothing else).
These idiot doctors who say it does not are lying to the public and should be prosecuted for spreading false information.
The only real reason people want to smoke pot is because it has what they call “better side effects.” This is because they get more high off of it than with tobacco. And, the tar build up and lung cancer happens just the same. So they figure if they want to smoke, they might as well smoke Marijuana instead.

The problem here? Marijuana is an inhibitor that is just like putting a drunk person behind the wheel of a car. Now instead of alcoholics to deal with, you have pot junkies.

Last year, it was discovered that “3rd hand” smoke also causes cancer – that’s the smoke you smell on your clothes and hair if you’ve been around cigarette smoke. So avoid people while they are smoking cigarettes for your own health!

Cigarette companies have manufactured them so that they are more addictive than heroin. So when you see someone addicted to cigs, there is no reason to look down on them, they are in for a serious life-threatening battle and up against one of the toughest drugs to quit. So, compassion is really the best approach.

A friend tried it (H) and when he quit he threw up all the time and felt horrible, never has that happened on cigarettes. He had to go to rehab to properly get off heroin, anyone who even tries to go to rehab for cigs has no self control. Weed helps prevent alziemers and relaxes your body and mind, it has never been linked to cancer like cigs and alcohol. The only downside to getting baked is the risk you run of legal trouble. If you’ve never smoked pot, shut up, you don’t know what it’s like; you’re just on the pathetic anti-marijuana band-waggon. Tabacco made this country in to what is is today, who are you to say marijuana isn’t what will make our country what it will be tomorrow.

Hemp makes stronger and more durable denim than cotton and some of the strongest rope. Hemp helps put nutrients back into the soil when farmed, much like peanuts. in 1908 more cars ran off of hemp seed oil than petroleum. Racism along with the cotton and oil industries forced the government into banning cannabis. All the disinformation about marijuana came from these corporations much as they still do today. Hemp saved America before and if we legalize cannabis it will help pull us out of economic tribulations once again.

(Not to mention, though they didn’t know this part at the time, it makes a better pulp-fiber, as used in plywood and particle board, than trees do. Hell, it even makes a kind of concrete that’s better than the kind we use! XD)

The Declaration of Independence is on hemp paper. Tree paper would have been dust by now, even with the special care they take of it, but with hemp the Declaration is still perfectly legible and still will be for hundreds, if not thousands of years.

As far as the article – it contradicts everything with respect to the cancer rates. Please look at these links for example:
        http://www.worldlifeexpectancy.com/cause-of-death/lung-cancers/by-country/
        http://www.wcrf.org/cancer_statistics/data_specific_cancers/lung_cancer_statistics.php
I’m from Bulgaria where nearly everybody smokes cigarettes (above 60%) and yet we’re on 27th place of lung cancer rate (smoking pot are like 5-7% on our side). In USA nearly everybody smokes pot and you’re at 10th place, Netherlands is in 7th place WHERE THE POT IS LEGAL (in the first link). You can find many other links with different but similar order. I cannot claim correlation because I don’t know what the other countries smoking pot/cigarettes are. I think the type and the food quality is one of the most important things as well as the air, the water quality and the physical activities but I cannot claim that neither. All I’m saying is that if the pot was so magical (beyond the magic of getting high :)) the USA and Netherlands should’ve been really low on the lung cancer rate. Please do some more research on those rates and post here. Those sites gather just the lung cancer rates reported from the world-wide medical facilities and don’t count the pot smoking rates – they don’t care about the pot smokers and thus they are non biased with that respect (actually they’re kind of ANTI TABACO biased). I would be really happy if what was written above was true i.e. we’ve discovered cancer cure (which is also a fun and not just a cure) but world wide cancer rates statistic don’t seem to support those claims.

        Like

        • It’s not a cancer cure, and it never claims to be. Even in the above article, it states “the -suggestion- of -some- protective effects”. That is a FAR cry from claiming to be a cure, dude.
The point is that there have been numerous studies that show that marijuana seems to, as a random side effect, stunt the growth of cancerous cells.

If you think for a moment, this is more impressive than it initially seems. These results were found during studies aimed to find a link between weed and cancer. The participants smoked unaltered marijuana, recreationally, with no intent or action taken towards cancer prevention at all.
Now think of morphine. In it’s natural state it has no pain-reducing comes from the poppy plant, and is super processed before it can be used as a pain killer.

Unaltered Marijuana has effects on cancer cells- by accident.
Imagine if studies specifically focused on it’s cancer-effective-properties were done. The specific properties involved could be isolated and potentially eventually refined into at least a treatment for cancer. As things stand now, marijuana is good for cancer patients because it’s anti-nausea properties help with the side effects of chemotherapy.

So while no one is claiming it’s a miracle cure for cancer, the fledgeling information we do have about the effects it has are promising, and worth looking into.

      http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/05/25/AR2006052501729.html

The largest study of its kind has unexpectedly concluded that smoking marijuana, even regularly and heavily, does not lead to lung cancer.

The new findings “were against our expectations,” said Donald Tashkin of the University of California at Los Angeles, a pulmonologist who has studied marijuana for 30 years.

“We hypothesized that there would be a positive association between marijuana use and lung cancer, and that the association would be more positive with heavier use,” he said. “What we found instead was no association at all, and even a suggestion of some protective effect.”

Federal health and drug enforcement officials have widely used Tashkin’s previous work on marijuana to make the case that the drug is dangerous. Tashkin said that while he still believes marijuana is potentially harmful, its cancer-causing effects appear to be of less concern than previously thought.

Earlier work established that marijuana does contain cancer-causing chemicals as potentially harmful as those in tobacco, he said. However, marijuana also contains the chemical THC, which he said may kill aging cells and keep them from becoming cancerous.
      ad_icon

Tashkin’s study, funded by the National Institutes of Health’s National Institute on Drug Abuse, involved 1,200 people in Los Angeles who had lung, neck or head cancer and an additional 1,040 people without cancer matched by age, sex and neighborhood.

They were all asked about their lifetime use of marijuana, tobacco and alcohol. The heaviest marijuana smokers had lighted up more than 22,000 times, while moderately heavy usage was defined as smoking 11,000 to 22,000 marijuana cigarettes. Tashkin found that even the very heavy marijuana smokers showed no increased incidence of the three cancers studied.

“This is the largest case-control study ever done, and everyone had to fill out a very extensive questionnaire about marijuana use,” he said. “Bias can creep into any research, but we controlled for as many confounding factors as we could, and so I believe these results have real meaning.”

Tashkin’s group at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA had hypothesized that marijuana would raise the risk of cancer on the basis of earlier small human studies, lab studies of animals, and the fact that marijuana users inhale more deeply and generally hold smoke in their lungs longer than tobacco smokers — exposing them to the dangerous chemicals for a longer time. In addition, Tashkin said, previous studies found that marijuana tar has 50 percent higher concentrations of chemicals linked to cancer than tobacco cigarette tar.

While no association between marijuana smoking and cancer was found, the study findings, presented to the American Thoracic Society International Conference this week, did find a 20-fold increase in lung cancer among people who smoked two or more packs of cigarettes a day.

The study was limited to people younger than 60 because those older than that were generally not exposed to marijuana in their youth, when it is most often tried.

Another new finding is that there are neural stem cells in the brain, that can take place of dead or dysfunctional neurons. Also pot doesn’t kill these brain cells, the process of smoking does. If you were to smoke a ground up piece of paper, your brain cells would be “killed off.” Alcohol kills affects the brain negatively as well, but marijuana in forms other than smoking does not adversely affect your brain.

        • O my God! Marijuana does NOT kill brain cells. The study that “proved” that it did was done incorrectly, and was later found inconclusive. Scientist put gas masks on RHESUS MONKEYS, and pumped it full of marijuana smoke. What happens if you pump a mask full of ANY smoke? Ding. Ding, Ding! You are not allowing oxygen in. It was like if you stand behind a car and suck on the tail pipe. Oxygen deprivation=death of brain cells. When they did the experiments a different way, they found no evidence of brain cell damage due to the actual smoking of marijuana. Research, dude, research…

But for cancer, aids and other disease patents who are in need of Marijuana, you have my support. For the rest of the people who smoke Marijuana for fun and for no apparent reason, don’t get caught by the law enforcement.

    • Unfortunately, Marinol has some very nasty side effects that include death. Four people have died from Marinol to date. Zero have died from the natural form of Marijuana. Marinol has been around a few years, Marijuana thousands. In many cases when people want to relax or “party”, alcohol is what people choose instead of marijuana because it is legal. So many have died from alcohol. No one to date has died from marijuana alone, ever.

So the law is not on the side of human life, in every case. Though it does support the profits of the alcohol, tobacco and pharmaceutical industries.

K.O.P. (knowledge is power). peace!

p.s., i was 12 when i started smoking and ive been smoking pot almost every day since i was 16. just remember that when you think about the “stupidity” that marijuana causes in its users. again, Peace!

The area he smokes in smells very strong of smoke and I have noticed the intensity increasing over the last few weeks. I have also noticed that I am having increased eye allergies when sitting downstairs (redness, burning, itching, watering, and contacts irritating me). But most importantly, my daughter has begun to get eczema and I have been told, in her case, it is a chemical and allergic reaction. Per her pediatrician, carcinogens are left behind from all forms of smoke and can increase allergies including flare ups in the skin. Again, I am all for the positive effects of marijuana but I am concerned for the health and well being of my children and family. I have encouraged him to smoke outside to reduce the risk of exposure but to date I have been unable to find information to support my concerns or disprove them. I would like to know what science you are referring to and where I can learn more about studies done on second and third-hand marijuana smoke.

        • Immediately solve this issue by getting your husband a vaporizer. There is really no reason to smoke.

I will say that the government’s top anti-drug researcher spent 30 years searching for a cancer-marijuana link, and after 30 years could find none. Which made no sense to him, as you have noted, the smoke does contain carcinogens. However, he probed this discrepancy further and found that also within marijuana smoke are chemicals which have ANTI cancerous properties, and encourage any cancerous cells to kill themselves, leaving healthy cells intact. This is the reason there is so much talk about marijuana curing cancer. It’s not just talk, in other countries, THC is being actively used to shrink tumors. This site has many articles on just that.

There have been no studies on second or third hand smoke as far as I know – these would only make sense if there was first a direct correlation. One can only assume if firs hand smoke does not cause cancer, second and third have even less of a chance (less than none).

A vaporizer is the way to go, for $50 you can solve all the issues you’ve mentioned.

Be well, and thanks for writing ~

depression, and patients with a multitude of other ailments. I also saw people die after the police took their medicine away. We ( The American Public ) have been
flat out lied to by our government about the alledged dangers of cannabis. Every American needs an education with the facts about the medical uses of cannabis
and about it’s saftey as compared to many other prescription drugs.

People need to start hearing the truth. LIES are dangerous to the health of our nation, and telling a lie should be punishable by life in prison. It’s time for legislation that will ensure we only hear the truth, and inprison anyone trying to spread lies and untrue propaganda for profit. Cannabis was made illegal due to the steep competition it presents to the wood pulp paper industry, and the chemical industry, and anyone perpetuating these lies against cannabis needs to be locked up for the rest of thier natural born days for endangering our health or the health benefits we could be enjoying from legalized cannabis medicine.

Marinol is a synthetic chemically produced form of THC. It does not contain the other 59 or so cannabinoids that are also medically benificial to human life. I have used it and found it to have zero benefit for the chronic pain I have suffered for nearly 20 years. I have not heard one single positive thing from anyone who has ever been prescribed marinol, yet 3 different doctors have allowed and or recomended that I use cannabis au-natural. Im tired of the lies and the ignorance of our people due to the lies we have all been told. You should be outraged !

  20. I presently live in a building where about 25% are young adults who smoke ‘cush’ marijuana. That’s what they call it.This stuff smells worse then a skunk. This smell travels through out our hallways, enters our units and elevators. It makes me dizzy, lightheaded and feeling sick. I have no allergies and yet I feel like I am in a room with 5000 lbs of ragweed. It’s very toxic to me and my family. 75%, the rest of the people who reside here, are sick of this stench as well. The management knows about this and they claim there is nothing they can do about it. Though many tenants do not object to people smoking marijuana we all find this skunk smell type to be very toxic to our health.
Many of us have no objections to legalizing marijuana and we wish the government would just do it already instead of subjecting our children to the crap that is going around such as this ‘cush’ skunk smelling stuff. It’s on they’re clothes too and no one will get into an elevator or stand any where around those who reek of this stench. Are there any laws pertaining to this toxic smell being emitting through out our building?
Thank you for your time in this matter. Oh and we don’t think we should all have to move either so don’t even suggest it as the only alternative.

      Like

      • Dude… You countered yourself in your statement “Career criminals are simply going to sell it cheaper or something else to someone else” the point is the eliminate the illegal market of marijuana… if it’s legalized, then the market vanishes. The criminals don’t, but the market does. Do you see illegal crime syndicates funded on cigarette movement? What about alcohol? When it was illegal, we had mobsters making millions off of it’s illegal distribution. What happened when it was legalized? They collapsed… And the goal isn’t to decrease marijuana demand, just decriminalize it. There aren’t a whole lot of organizations out there trying to slow demand. I really haven’t seen many ad councils ads on tv about it, just cigs and alcohol.

        Like

      • Really? How is that working out so far? Putting people in jail and keeping it illegal has not slowed the demand it increases it! We all want what we can’t have lol.

    • Just one quick comment, although it may smell toxic to you, it is not toxic. Cannabis is one of the least toxic drugs known to man (per Harvard’s Lester Grinspoon). The smoke has not only failed to produce cancers, but studies show cannabis smoke actually encourages atophagy – cancerous cells kill themselves leaving healthy cells intact.
Some people find that skunk smell most pleasant, and find perfumes and drier sheets smells (which also waft everywhere – sometimes causing one to hold their breath in the elevator) to be equally as distressful. But, drier sheets, laundry smells and many perfumes actually do cause negative health effects. Personally, I wish these products were banned. I have to run an air purifier in my apartment as well as keep a towel under the door to prevent these noxious smells from wafting around my apartment and making me sick. On that note, why aren’t cigarettes illegal? Even third hand smoke causes cancer – but that smoke is everywhere and we who care about our health and who want fresh air are left to fend for ourselves.

Sorry you’re having to deal with this too. Get an air purifier! It’s well worth it.

      Like

      • I hear you. We don’t have the issue of these other smells entering our units. I too wish cigs were non-existent. Can’t stand at the bus stops around here. An air purifier doesn’t help, we have 4: 1 in each room. We have weather stripping around our unit door and we put towels at the bottom of every door too. Nothing helps since this stench is in the air of the building. It’s a 107 unit building and it’s on every single floor. It’s throughout the building. Even walking around the outside of the building can be toxic with the stink emitting from peoples open balcony doors and windows. Just this morning as I went to the underground the elevator reeked and I had to refuse to get on. 11 am for goodness sake. I think I will look more closely at article 47 in the Landlord and tenant act as well as look at environment hazard laws as this is akin to a gas leak.
I’ve done a lot of research on this type of drug. And spoke with many people of many factions. I’ve learned a lot. One thing I was told is that this stuff is hemp not marijuana. The so called ‘Real’ marijuana does not have this hemp stink. Albeit another stink but not a skunk smell. For example Jamaican or Columbia marijuana does not have this smell because, I was told, it is not hemp. I’m learning from the side lines as I don’t indulge. LOL Still, even after gathering the info I have to date, I’m still learning. As for legalizing it, I discovered it’s already legal and being sold in stores throughout my city and the cities around mine. I took my son to his hockey game and discovered a new business had opened where, like in the middle east, they were smoking from bongs. Yes I inquired. Here we have laws that claim people can not smoke in restaurants and here is a business designed to do just that. I am confused.
        Thank you for responding though.

Most of the time that people say marijuana isn’t bad is because he or she is addicted and likes how it feels. How can something be bad if it feels good right? Doesn’t matter. Marijauna is worse than cigarettes. It can’t cause cancer, but it has other worse damaging effects than cigarettes. There is enough evidence to prove this. Look at all the legitimate research from licensed and professional organizations, not just articles written by pot smokers, because the argument is going to sway towards the obvious.

You can try smoking heavily for a week or so, as this builds tolerance, it takes more to get to you. You can also try exercising and drinking a lot of water to get the THC out of your system.

ALSO regarding you stating Mairjuana is NOT a cancer causing agent. That is false. A study showed that there was marked increase in testicular cancer by as much as 70% when associated with marijuana use…so I guess if you dont like your BALLS go ahead and smoke up boys.. . There is more than one type of cancer in the world than Lung cancer…people always fixate on that when it comes to smoking or inhaling anything and conviently the other forms out there. Also a very extensive Austratian study showed that Alcohol use was typically associated with marijuana use with 75% of users and increased greatly when smoking with Marijuan was involved because of the seeming effects of the two when used together. If It was found if Marijuana users did not have the weed or could not afford it or have access it to they would turn alochol at an increased rate than they did prior……just saying its not a bed of roses for smokers of pot and you shouldn’t it is…I am not for it or against and I dont care about the comparison between smokers. just dont act like the debate is over and done with when it comes to the health risks involved in using the stuff.

The wire services are having a field day. Marijuana causes testicular cancer!

Well, you can relax. The results of the study published in the Journal Cancer, (and released online February 9th) is full of caveats, and say it only “appears” that a link “may” exist.

The results and methodology of any research must be looked at closely, and this one is no exception. First of all, an analysis of the research on Medpage , indicates that the study done at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer research center was instituted by a scientist, Janet R. Daling, Ph.D who may very well have set out to prove a link between testicular cancer and cannabis use. While this does not necessarily indicate a bias, it is valuable to note, as studies of this nature often have flaws (and this one is no exception.)

      A little about testicular cancer.

First of all, understand that testicular cancer is very rare, amounting to only 1 percent of all cancers in U.S. males. Only about 8000 men are diagnosed with this type of cancer each year, and less than 400 die. It is most common in white males of Scandinavian descent. Other risk factors include: a family history of the disease, abnormal testicular development, or undescended testes.

There are two types of testicular cancer, nonseminoma and seminoma.

It is important to note that the study did not show a direct link, it only suggested a possible one. In addition this potential correlation was only with the nonseminoma variety, which accounts for just 40% of such cancers, or about 3200 annual cases.

      A very small study indeed.

The study was based on a very small sampling of 369 men with testicular cancer who filled out a questionnaire. The responses were evaluated based on lifestyle choices, and compared to the answers from a group of 979 cancer-free group with similar backgrounds.

In addition researchers were only able to interview about 250 of men from the first group, and little more than half of the cancer-free control group. Another problem is that the questionnaire relied on self-reported use of marijuana, which, because it is an illicit drug, can skew answers, and finally, there was no central review of the pathology.

So, whether young men facing a diagnosis of cancer are more likely to admit to cannabis use than those not faced with a life threatening disease, cannot be determined from this study. It is also a distinct possibility that other issues such as exercise, diet, tobacco, alcohol and other illicit or prescription drug use were not effectively factored in to the questionnaire.

All in all, the holes in this study make it highly questionable, and in an age where cannabinoid research in the United States has been limited to those studies meant to show harm rather than benefits, we should take these results with a large grain of salt.

    • Listen, Aakash. People who are for marijuana usage have SO much evidence that’s it’s not bad for your health unless of course you lace it with something. People who are against it usually come up with outrageous things like “One joint equals 10 cigarettes” or they have nothing to attempt to prove that it’s so “horrible”. If you don’t want to smoke it, plain and simple: Don’t. Have you ever seen someone die from an O.D. from marijuana, erm no. It’s just a plant, it grows that way. If you just happen to catch it on fire there are some side effects: Happy, Hungry, Sleepy, (possibly horny). But those are the things happiness is made of! The only “chemical” in marijuana are THC and “Fuck it”. If you’re worried about not having the money to pay that light bill, just take one puff off of a joint. One puff. You’ll be like “I don’t know what Ima do about this light bill. They don’t want a deposit, they don’t want half of it, I don’t know what Ima do” *puff*….”Fuck them damn lights. I’ve got 12 candles I’ll be waiting to burn them bitches.” Anyways…I’m not a Christian or believer but I do know for you believers that it simply says in the bible “All seed bearing plants are here for us to consume or use”, marijuana is a seed-bearing plant, so we shall use it if we please. If it was so harmful, why did you’re God put it on this Earth for our consumption? Indian’s smoked pot from peace-pipes. I bet you Jesus passed around a peace-pipe! So research a little more before you decide to rag on pot smokers.
      Thank you.

“President Barack Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder have maintained that the current administration will not raid medical marijuana dispensaries that cooperate with state and local laws, although the President is not in favor of full legalization on a national level.[1][2] In July 2009, Gil Kerlikowske, Director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy, further clarified the federal government’s position when he stated that “marijuana is dangerous and has no medicinal benefit” and that “legalization is not in the president’s vocabulary, and it’s not in mine.”[3] However, a January 2010 settlement between the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency and the Wo/Men’s Alliance for Medical Marijuana (WAMM) provides an example confirming the administration policy as communicated by Attorney General Holder, as WAMM successfully reached an agreement to re-open after being shut down by the federal government in 2002.[4][5]
Despite statements as a Senator, where he called for marijuana decriminalization, promises as a presidential candidate where he stated that marijuana laws needed to be reconsidered and explicit statements as president that he would respect state medical marijuana laws, Barak Obama has presided over 1.7 million marijuana arrests and a nationwide campaign of raiding medical marijuana dispensaries. Dozens of dispensaries have been closed with their owners and workers facing jail and prison sentences.”

They would of never reached a settlement if not for smart people that don’t just listen to what others say. And where do you live anyways?

  41. Smoke is smoke. Your healthier not smoking cigarettes OR marijuana. Smh. It may temporarily relieve pains and aches and make you relax, but as I see it there are so many other ways to relax then to smoke some plant that makes you high, just like alochol, they say 1 or 2 beers a day your healthier then a person that does not drink at all. How about eat right, excercise, find time and a place every week to go relax. Self meditation, you don’t have to smoke shit, drink shit, or take shit. Your sober, and relaxed with meditation, I have bad anixety and it’s helps me, I use to smoke but it only caused my anxiety to get worse, so whats your excuse or reason for that? You can do anything on your own. Your brain is a powerful machine. You know when your driving from point a to point b and you don’t hardly recall the drive to point b cause you were probably day dreaming? Well that’s how powerful your mind and brain is, your unconscious mind was taking care of you while your conscious mind was else where. Alot of things are in your head, for example if you look at your hand and think and believe your really gonna break out into a rash and you just can’t stop thinking it’s gonna happen, it will happen, it’s all in your head but it’s real. The mind and brain are your most powerful tools, use them instead of smoking something to get away from reality temporarily, same for drinking or any drug.

    Like

    • Your brain is powerful, yes, but sadly, it’s rather autonomous. When discussing the benefits of marijuana, your talking about a drug that has extremely high success rates as compared to it’s pharmacutical counterparts. Also, that little driving bit isn’t because your brain is taking care of you. It’s extremely dangerous and can lead to disaster. Often times your subconscious doesn’t recognize changes in speed limits, construction, etc… and just goes with the flow, rather than being an active driver. Smoke is smoke yes, but who are you to tell another person what they can and cannot put into their body in order to alleviate a problem, regardless of what that problem may be.

I’d even say tobacco & nicotine is more of a gateway drug than marijuana and THC…. I’ve never felt compulsion towards having more weed, and my mother ditched me at the mall because her cravings were getting the best of her. The cocaine/ecstacy/who-knows-what-else addicts at my school started with CIGARETTES. In conclusion, I’d say tobacco is the gateway drug here… if it were illegal more people would be charged for it than people with marijuana use, I bet you.

I became disabled in Dec. of 1999 with what my Neurosurgeon calls: An Astro-sytomic brain tumor, which BTW ruptured in my skull giving me a 100% chance of death. Somehow I lived and am a very intelligent human being with a 4.0 in high-school and a 3.63 in college while sustaining a role as the Secretary for my honor society, lead math tutor and graduated with a two year degree in one year. Unfortunately I was effected by many physical ailments aka: Migraines 24/7, neck pain 24/7 and stomach nausea 24/7. I have been on pretty much every medicine for pain or nausea that is legal and none of it helped me. I tried marijuana and to me it is a miracle plant(not a drug). Drugs are manufactured and processed!! Now that I have stated my two cents, let me add on a tad. Because of some recent hard times with my SSI, I have lost my income and lost the ability to smoke marijuana(parents house) and no they don’t understand nor support the fact that marijuana helps me live and actually enjoy my life. After 5 weeks of being at my parents house without marijuana, I will say that, I’m now depressed again and in constant full body pain(including nausea again).

Stick that in your pipe and smoke it!

  54. The issue isn’t the dangers to the users but to those around them. If I smoke tabacco around other people or in my apartment and it goes from balcony to someone elses it won’t make them stoned.
If you smoke marijuana and it seeps under doors and into others windows, you are making them stoned against their will

If I poured alcohol down your throat without your permission you could charge me with batter. I have nothing against alcohol but if you force a mood altering stimulatant into someone else body you will be charged.
This is the real problem with Pot – people don’t care if people smoke it -they are concerned with containment.

In Canada when they first legalized it for medical purposes they had idiots smoking it around their kids and neighbours were getting into fist fights because they were in constant clouds that were causing them to be stoned against their will. This was mostly in BC, but it almost reversed the needed legalization for medical purpose laws.

Contain it and it will be legal tomorrow

  56. The association between smoking marijuana and lung cancer remains unclear. Marijuana smoke contains about 50% more benzopyrene and nearly 75% more benzanthracene, both known carcinogens, than a comparable quantity of unfiltered tobacco smoke (Tashkin, 2013). Moreover, the deeper inhalations and longer breath-holding of marijuana smokers result in greater exposure of the lung to the tar and carcinogens in the smoke. Lung biopsies from habitual marijuana-only users have revealed widespread alterations to the tissue, some of which are recognized as precursors to the subsequent development of cancer (Tashkin, 2013). – See more at: http://adai.uw.edu/marijuana/factsheets/respiratoryeffects.htm#sthash.gZxRQBOD.dpuf

That’s bullshit! Don’t hold the smoke in for as long as you can! You don’t absorb any more THC by holding it in and are dramatically increasing the amount of tar that stays in your lungs.

  58. You know I’m only a 23 year old male living in B.C Canada and so far I have read every single reply to this article. Now I’m not going to blow smoke up your ass and say that I’m some super smart kid that has always excelled and has always had the top grades compared to all of my peers, infact on the contrary, for most of my high school days I often got C+’s or C-‘s (except for the classes I actually had an interest in, usually all the shop classes and P.E those I got A’s in 😛 ) but after reading all of these reply’s its my conclusion, (and this is after researching the affects of pot for the past couple years because this is something that has peaked my interest) the only negative effect pot has on the human body seems to be the actual smoke characteristics (in which the’re many different ways of taking marijuana without smoking it, as mentioned many times in this article), otherwise it seems very beneficial. Now this is still up to debate mind you. But no body has come to a complete and concrete conclusion, because unfortunately enough, the’re just to many variables to consider in providing any solid findings.
But it is in my opinion that many of these people who are on the (anti pot bandwagon) as it has been referred to many times in this thread, all seem to be uneducated in the matter and are feeding into the governments anti-marijuana propaganda, or they haven’t invested enough time in researching the matter (or their the same person/group that’s paid by gov/corporate people to throw a wrench in the cogs so-da-speak). This is clear by the lack of evidence provided by the people thus far in this thread. Plus the evidence that is provided is usually studies funded by the government or big corporations. and for those people feeding into those studies; remember the best source of information comes from independent studies! For most of those studies are the least bias and they have nothing to win or lose from telling you their findings, where its the exact opposite for studies funded by the government and big corporations, so use caution!!
Also so far I have not seen any one pushing anyone to smoke the plant so I don’t understand why some people on this thread are saying pot smokers push the “drug”(hate calling it a drug, puts a bad label on it) on others, there hasn’t been a single reply of anyone saying “everyone should smoke”. This isn’t that episode of family guy where their watching Lassie and every couple seconds a man pops up saying “SMOKE!” or “ARE YA SMOKIN YET!” so far this article has just tryed to inform and educate people on a doctors findings and he is a doctor for a reason, usually means he has many more years of education then the common person and their two cents.
If your a none smoker then good on ya! and there for I say Dont Go Changing! (also a quote from the movie OutCold haha)
But most of you are hypocrites, first you say its horrible for your body, so just don’t do it, then some of you even say pot smokers push smoking onto other when its the opposite, so far this thread has be none smokers saying “dont smoke its bad for you” and then the smokers saying back “its my body let me do what I want; I feel no repercussions or health side effects only benefits” (in a nutshell) so who’s really pushing what?
And lastly it would be mighty mighty! ignorant to think that marijuana is worse then alcohol/cigarettes or even aspirin when all three of just those drugs kill thousands per year in every country, your more likely to get struck by lightning AND win the lottery in the same day then OD on weed because as mentioned above its non-toxic, I’m sure your more likely to die from eating a non-toxic crayon, so the fact of the matter is, some people need marijuana for health reasons and some people need it for relax or make them feel happy for a couple hours, this is suppose to be a free world right? so who is anyone to say any different
and if the smell is a big deal to your friends/family/neighbors, then get a vaporizer it burns less weed, and the smell gets significantly! reduced and you wont have those people barking at you about how bad the “smoke” is for your lungs (which is still up to debate) Please people educate yourselves, marijuana has the power to overthrow governments with its power of bringing people together, and just watching 1 hour of world news I would say it’s about time for a change for the better wouldn’t you? the world is a messed up place run by crooks and people who dont have the right moral’s. Information truly is power!

Research has shown that, in chronic users, marijuana’s adverse impact on learning and memory persists after the acute effects of the drug wear off; when marijuana use begins in adolescence, the effects may persist for many years. Research from different areas is converging on the fact that regular marijuana use by young people can have long-lasting negative impact on the structure and function of their brains.

A recent study of marijuana users who began using in adolescence revealed a profound deficit in connections between brain areas responsible for learning and memory. And a large prospective study (following individuals across time) showed that people who began smoking marijuana heavily in their teens lost as much as 8 points in IQ between age 13 and age 38; importantly, the lost cognitive abilities were not restored in those who quit smoking marijuana as adults. (Individuals who started smoking marijuana in adulthood did not show significant IQ declines.)

Marijuana raises heart rate by 20-100 percent shortly after smoking; this effect can last up to 3 hours. In one study, it was estimated that marijuana users have a 4.8-fold increase in the risk of heart attack in the first hour after smoking the drug. This may be due to increased heart rate as well as the effects of marijuana on heart rhythms, causing palpitations and arrhythmias. This risk may be greater in older individuals or in those with cardiac vulnerabilities.

If you have more info about these facts I’m interested to know.

He finally came out in favor of legalization after failing to connect cancer or even COPD with cannabis smoking. He actually found that pot smokers have LESS head and neck cancers than those who don’t smoke at all.

  72. Check out this article I found. It breaks down exactly why tobacco smoke increases the risk of cancer and marijuana smoke doesn’t.
Despite the fact they have many of the same carcinogenic ingredients, they don’t affect the brain in the same way. Two of the most interesting points to me were that nicotine keeps damaged cells from destroying themselves and THC inhibits the enzyme that is needed to activate some of the carcinogens. Lots of medical and chemical terminology, but you get the message. Also lists all references used. I’ve smoked almost daily for aprox. 15 yrs and I could still read, interpret and comprehend what the article was saying. Also like others posted, I graduated magna cum laude from college, so Hahahaha I guess I still have a few brain cells left 😉

    http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1277837/

Interesting point being that this article is from 2005, so for at least 9 years they have had scientific proof of this, yet tobacco is still perfectly legal and marijuana isn’t!!?? Proof to me of the flawed system of a country that values its ridiculous laws based on preserving their racist ideals more than the value of human life.

-Don’t make me laugh. I’ve seen many cannabis addicts. Its not really the substance that is addictive but the “High” you get that is addictive. I have two cousins that are addicts and I see the effects from their cannabis abuse; ages 22 and 35. Immaturity, Slowed functions, Unable to think clearly, The capability to learn is also slowed. Even my mother was an addict in her early years. I know the effects because I’ve seen them through family members.

You tell the positive but neglect to tell the negative possibility. This marijuana info is completely bias.

    • Addiction to cannabis rarely occurs because, in general, persons who have problems with drug addiction usually prefer more potent psychoactive drugs. When dronabinol was initially approved as a medication it was placed in Schedule II of the CSA. After several years on the market, it was down-regulated to Schedule III because of the lack of diversion and little evidence of addiction. Initially, animal studies are used to evaluate the abuse potential of drugs, with the understanding that these do not necessarily reflect similar outcomes in humans. It is important to note that numerous studies have concluded that while cannabis may produce a feeling of euphoria in humans, in general animals will not self-administer THC (DSM-R IV, 2000).

In 1994 Jack E. Henningfield, of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), and Neal L. Benowitz, of the University of California at San Francisco (UCSF), ranked six commonly used drugs by five criteria: withdrawal symptoms (dependence), reinforcement (craving), tolerance, dependence (addiction) potential, and intoxication. They ranked the six drugs from 1 as the most serious to 6 as the least serious. Cannabis (marijuana) was ranked lowest for withdrawal symptoms, tolerance, and dependence (addiction) potential; it ranked close to caffeine in the degree of reinforcement and higher than caffeine and nicotine only in the degree of intoxication (Henningfield and Benowitz, 1994).

For someone who doesn’t smoke pot , the smell alone is a turn off not to mention being around someone who can’t carry on a conversation that a four year could have. I hate to sound like a buzz kill but I feel marajuana is still the number one gateway drug

Save anothwr 3 billion from prison fees an let say you have 6 billion a year. So if you count on marijuana legalization it will take 2 thousand years to pay off the USA debt. Prostitution on the other hand would bring 20 billion dollars of revenue per year if legalized so it will be more efficient to legalize that 🙂

  81. Please double check this info. I think is far away from the truth. But nicotine alone is not the issue or at least not the only issue. Everytime you burn organic matter it creates all sorts free radicals most of them potential carcinogens. It doesn’t matter which leaves you burn- tobacco, marijuana, herbs, oak tree leaves, etc. they produce pretty similar sets of carcinogens. But the good news is that since we, the humans evolved around the fire we have prety good lung cancer suppressor genes. But nobody’s perfect. From time to time those genes get defects, either we inherit them from our parents or we aqquire those defects on our own as we go through life. Therefore it’s the best if you can avoid inhaling smoke as overall. But I, myself have done a lots of “smoke inhaling” 🙂 so it is hypocritical for me giving advises like this one 🙂

  85. Whether Marijuana is legal or not. Age regulations is a priority; cigarettes, age 18-20 to use or buy. This rule is for our youths health which probably might be heavily enforced beside the legalization itself. I’m advising young readers to not feel as they will have the full rights, but after the federal or state adult age is reached then feel free to make choices (within or out of your state) as a responsible adult.

For those of you that wonder or have noticed the lack of pot studies, then here is your answer: No one will do heavy research on something that is illegal. You will be wasting your time unless this will be a political stunt to score points for the side who supports it in gain of the peoples vote. Politics fill the money bag of the lowest bidder research team and then they help and support their agenda.

  87. Something else to keep in mind is that tobacco is a carcinogen even when it’s not ignited; people that ‘dip’ or chew it get various forms of mouth cancers. Marijuana only produces carcinogens when ignited, but as this article mentions there’s no documented case of it causing cancer.

  89. I dont really know where to begin as each side had its own agenda. But this article is mostly rubbish, esoteric data and flat out bullshit. The journal of American medicine compared groups of smokers ones that smoked marihuana and ones that smoked tobacco, also subgroups that smoked both. The comparison had a baseline as the average cigarette smoker in this tobacco group smoked 9 cigarettes a day. The average marihuana smoker in this group however smoked less than two joints a month worth of marihuana. So actually the comparison is between people who smoke 270 cigarettes a month verses less than two joints a month. Don’t kid yourselves there’s nothing good that results from inhaling either one. There’s a myriad of issues that result from vaporizing as well and this needs further research but the results are not promising. There is no risk free method of damaging your lungs. The assertions regarding water pipes or “bongs” are ridiculous. Smoking out of water pipes regularly will damage your lungs faster than smoking tobacco. There were several studies published in the 1990’s that clearly demonstrated this.

And to honest I think the marijuana age limit should be 18. Even though I’m under age I find balancing weed and is school is a big responsibility and actually helps during school. Depending on the weed, being high in class actually sometimes helps me. Although I do forget some things it just makes me study harder. I do have some questions which may have been answered above but would love a reply. I’m 15 (Very young) and my brother and I have bonded throughout weed and have become very smart about it but anyways, how bad is weed for my undeveloped brain. How bad will this effect my brain in the future if I smoke once or twice a week. Sometimes 3-4 a week and sometimes none for 2 weeks. Does weed make me lazy? Can your lungs recover from the tar that weed gives your lungs? How will my lungs be effected? Thanks for this forum! It answered a lot! Please answer my questions!

    • I really don’t feel comfortable answering your questions, legally speaking. You can find research (I think this is on huffington post) that shows that while teen alcohol use damages the brain, cannabis use does not, and they have noted that it actually grows brain cells (neurogenisis). There are conflicting reports about the effects of mj on teens, so no one can really definitively answer your questions. When it becomes more legal federally, lots of studies will be done, and then we will know much more.

No need to shoot down opinions and personal experiences. Everyone’s body is different and reacts differently to certain substances. We need more focus on putting our minds together to achieve something in a positive and respectful manner.. This doesn’t help anything by having pointless arguments over social media. Instead of bitching at each other on the world wide web, why don’t you all turn off your computers and go do something better with your time… I’m only on here because i need material to write a research paper for my college education. Im writing a paper on how marijuana smoke does not lead to the same type of cancer that cigarettes do.. After reading about 20 messages or so from this “blog,” I’ve come to realize that humanity is doomed because we cannot respect each others opinions, even if they oppose your own, and channel that energy in a positive manner. I smoke weed daily and have tripped several times in my life off LSD & Shrooms, they really open your mind up and help you realize the bigger picture. Three things, Fuck the government, Fuck any organization that hurts the environment, and Fuck anyone who cannot respect another persons opinion… You are leading us to our own demise. Peace & Love.

Doctors have no approved medicine to help treat marijuana dependence and abuse, but in small new clinical trial, topiramate reduced the amount of cannabis heavy smokers used when they lit up. The results also show, however, that many volunteers couldn’t tolerate the drug’s side effects.

    • Quoting from WebMD:

      “Side Effects

Tiredness, drowsiness, dizziness, loss of coordination, tingling of the hands/feet, loss of appetite, bad taste in your mouth, diarrhea, and weight loss may occur. Mental problems such as confusion, slowed thinking, trouble concentrating or paying attention, nervousness, memory problems, or speech/language problems may also occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly.

Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medication because he or she has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects.

Tell your doctor right away if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur: signs of kidney stones (such as severe back/side/abdominal/groin pain, fever, chills, painful/frequent urination, bloody/pink urine).

A small number of people who take anticonvulsants for any condition (such as seizures, bipolar disorder, pain) may experience depression, suicidal thoughts/attempts, or other mental/mood problems. Tell your doctor right away if you or your family/caregiver notice any unusual/sudden changes in your mood, thoughts, or behavior including signs of depression, suicidal thoughts/attempts, thoughts about harming yourself.

Tell your doctor right away if any of these rare but serious side effects occur: rapid breathing, fast/slow/irregular heartbeat, bone pain, broken bones, loss of consciousness, unusual bleeding/bruising.

Rarely, topiramate may cause a very serious eye problem, generally within 1 month of starting treatment. If untreated, this eye problem can lead to permanent blindness. Therefore, get medical help right away if any of these side effects occur: sudden vision changes (such as decreased vision, blurred vision), eye pain/redness.

This medication can rarely cause a serious metabolic problem (high amount of ammonia in the blood), especially if you are also taking valproic acid. Tell your doctor right away if you experience sudden/unexplained tiredness, vomiting, or mental changes (such as decreased alertness).

A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. However, get medical help right away if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing.

This is not a complete list of possible side effects. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.”

      http://www.webmd.com/drugs/2/drug-14494-6019/topamax-oral/topiramate-oral/details#side-effects

      ~~

In my opinion, besides these side effects, there is also the issue of cannabinoid deficiency, and the potential need for a daily dose because of, among other things, the astounding amount of carcinogens in our environment (glyphosate, for example) (or C8 https://youtu.be/V7dMmzAP3WY).

When Tommy Chong went into jail and quit using cannabis, that was when he got cancer.

I’d like to know more about “cannabis addiction”, as from what I know of the science, it is only a psychological addiction; it is rated as less addictive than caffeine.

No amount of waffley BS can make that non-fact. I smoke nothing. But to compare relative “dangers” is a path fraught with uncertainty. Especially considering the overwhelming majority of (at least recreational) pot smokers use tobacco “mixers” anyway. Might be wiser to focus on tge independent safeness of the product you advocate, tgan its alkeged benefits over other psycho-active substances.

And no quotes of mass amounts of research showing increase of heart attacks in pot smokers. Both cigarette and pot smoking suck. I grew up smoking pot for years with my friends and later quit like a few others. But all my friends that continued to smoke it have screwed their lives up and walk around like zombies with droopy eyes, lazy, and no ambition. It’s very sad how slow they are, and they even walk around believing they are geniuses and are clueless to how stupid they look and act, and messed up their thinking processes are. I wish I could go back in time to show them how messed up their lives would end up being because of pot. Screw all the studies people are being paid to do and publish. Just open your eyes and look at a long term pot smoker. And notice the immaturity and how they still think it makes them look cool. Sad.
