“The benefit from smoking as a route of administration is instant action and the ability of the patient to self titrate the dose needed for relief. Here we describe how patients can achieve similar quick acting relief and the ability to control dose without smoking. It is important that the medical community understand that whole cannabis products are available today that provide significant relief without smoking. We don’t have to wait for a pharmaceutical pill to be developed years in the future in order to have the benefits of cannabis. The present pill (Marinol) has proven very unsatisfactory due to a long delay of action time, poor absorption in the GI tract, and its failure to include many of the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory cannabinoids present in whole cannabis and its extracts. In addition, future pharmaceuticals will be wildly expensive.  [Editor’s note: Most importantly, side effects of Marinol include death, with the FDA reporting 4 deaths directly related to Marinol, and one death indirectly related.]

Tinctures are not new. Until cannabis was banned in 1937, tinctures were the primary type of cannabis medicines. Tinctures are essentially alcohol extractions of whole cannabis (usually the flowers and trim leaves). Tinctures are easy to make and very inexpensive. Tinctures contain all 80 of the essential cannabinoids instead of only one with Marinol. Some of the cannabinoids such as cannibidiol (CBD) actually reduce the psychoactive effects of THC while increasing the overall efficacy of the preparation.

The best way to use tinctures is sublingually (under the tongue). Titration or dose control is easily achieved by the number of drops a patient places under the tongue where the medicine is rapidly absorbed into the arterial system and is quickly transported to the brain and body. All a patient need do with tincture is use a few drops, wait for the desired medical effects, and either use more or stop as the situation indicates. Tinctures can be flavored for better taste. They are best stored in dark bottles in the refrigerator. Since tinctures average some 75% ethanol there is little worry of bacterial or other biological contamination. Those who wish to avoid alcohol can instead use their tincture as a base for making a concentrated elixir. (recipe)”  – via Smokeless Medicine

Here is Dr. Frankl’s excellent post on tinctures

A Note from Jay R. Cavanaugh, Ph.D., AAMC, National Director ~

Many patients who utilize and benefit from medical cannabis do not wish to smoke due to the perceived health hazards of smoking or for other personal reasons. These patients are in something of a bind. Smoking cannabis delivers the active cannabinoids within seconds. Medicine is absorbed in the lungs and goes directly to the brain and general circulation. The same effect can be achieved with a vaporizer, which is safer than smoking burning vegetable matter. Since the effects of inhaled cannabis are so quick, it is easy for patients to titrate their dose by simply waiting a minute or two in between puffs.

Oral cannabis, such as our Better Bud Butter, is absorbed in a very different fashion from smoking or inhalation. The GI tract gradually absorbs Cannabinoids over the course of one to two hours. Medicine is processed first by the liver, which converts some cannabinoids such as delta nine to delta 11 version of THC. Orally delivered cannabis requires four to ten times the amount of the smoked version in order to achieve the same effect. Orally delivered cannabis can present a problem in achieving the required or desired dose level in any consistent fashion.

Tincture is designed to address the problems of rapid medicine delivery and consistent dosing. Most tinctures are made to be used under the tongue or sublingually. English pharmaceutical companies are presently working on a cannabis extract “spray” that can be used under the tongue in a similar fashion. These sprays are not expected to be approved for use in the United States for years and will be very expensive. Absorption by the arterial blood supply under the tongue is completed in seconds. One trick is to not swallow the dose as, if swallowed, absorption will be in the GI tract. Many patients, though, add their tincture to a cup of tea or cranberry juice for easy delivery. When tincture is used in a beverage, absorption will be slower than if absorbed under the tongue. While tincture absorbed in an empty stomach is accomplished in minutes, conversion in the liver remains, as does the difficulty in titrating dose. Usually, a tincture dose is delivered by means of a medicine dropper or a teaspoon. A rule of thumb on dose is that patients receive benefit from 3-4 drops to a couple of full droppers depending upon the potency of the tincture and the patient’s own unique requirements among other factors.

The methods listed below will detail two major methods of preparing tincture. While the methods are optimized for purity and potency, ultimately these will largely be determined by the purity and potency of the cannabis from which the tincture is made. Another item of note in regard to starting material for tincture is the patient or caregiver selection of strain. A rough rule of thumb is to select Indica dominant strains for cramping and muscle spasticity and Sativa dominant strains for pain relief. The reality, though, is often that the strain is unknown or not well characterized. Trial and error is usually required to acquire the appropriate strain and the proper dose level.

General Rules:

Tincture is an extraction of active cannabinoids from plant material. Cannabis contains many chemicals that can either upset the stomach or taste nasty. One of the goals of extraction is to secure the cannabinoids while leaving out as many of the terpenes and chlorophylls as possible. Both heat and light adversely effect cannabinoids and should be avoided or minimized. Tincture should be stored in airtight dark glass containers kept at room temperature or below. Avoid plastic containers. The ethanol in the tincture may solubilize some of the free vinyls in the plastic. (Source)

Cold Method (recommended)

Here is the recipe for highest quality tincture. This method does not use heat so keeps the integrity of the cannabinoids intact.

“Making tincture cold preserves the integrity of cannabinoids. To be potent, this method requires starting material high in cannabinoid content such as flowers or kief made from trim and leaf. The material must be mold free and dry.”- from Dr Allan Frankyl:  (Please pop over to Dr. Frankyl’s site and read his excellent post on making tinctures. He includes much information about CBD and more details than we can include here.)

NOTE: Our readers have pointed out that the below recipe fails to make note of the need to decarboxylate your cannabis first, as described in the “hot method” below. Dennis Hill writes about decarboxylation and its necessity for those curing cancer here.

Also see: Decarboxylating Cannabis: Turning THCA into THC

Below is a video on the subject. (You will notice a bit of variation in the advice given online about decarboxylation and  tinctures.)

Recipe from WAMM:

1. Fill jar ¾ full of herb

2. Fill rest of jar with alcohol; leave some room at top, stir.

3. Shake jar [vigorously] one or two times a day  for 2 weeks [or leave it until there is no green color left in the plant matter]

4. Strain through metal tea strainer or silkscreen.

You can use whatever kind of clean glass, not plastic, jar you have with a tight lid. One-quart mason jars are ideal. Grind the herb thoroughly in a blender. It should be well ground but doesn’t have to be a powder. You can use leaf, bud, shake, joint leftover, or stems. Too many stems will wreck your blender and a weaker tincture. Leaf work fine but for higher potency use shake or bud. Fill the jar ¾ full of herb; it does not have to be exact. You can use anywhere from ½ to 2/3 part herb but ¾ will make a full strength tincture. Use the highest proof alcohol you can, Everclear, which is 180 proof, but hard to find. So just use the highest proof Vodka you can find. Pour alcohol over the herb, filling the rest of the jar. Leave just enough space (an inch or so) at the top so that you will be able to shake the jar. Stir the mixture; the herb will absorb some of the alcohol so you may need to add more. Put the lid on tightly; label the contents and the date you started. It takes two weeks for the alcohol to extract all the active elements from the herb. Shake the jar once or twice a day for 2 weeks. The alcohol will rise to the top and a deep green/red color will develop. After 2 weeks of aging you can strain the tincture through a metal tea strainer or a silk screen into a small tincture bottle with a dropper. You can leave the rest in the jar if you want, it will age and mellow in flavor and you can strain off as much as you want at a time. Alcohol is a strong preservative it will hold for a long time, be careful when handling the tincture, it satins and will turn everything it comes in contact with green. Use Ultra Palmolive anti-bacterial dish soap, the orange kind, to clean the glass, metal or other ceramic utensils, (do not use plastic) sinks and counter tops works best at dissolving THC residue.

Dosage varies per individual but start with half a dropper dissolved in hot tea or water. Hot tea will dissipate some of the alcohol and activate the THC a bit. It can be taken straight but may burn the tongue and has a very strong herbal taste. [If you cut it with equal parts water, you can hold the dosage under the tongue without burning. Takes effect in seconds.]

This video shows cold-method tincture being made. Again, remember to decarboxylate first. Note that the mixture can remain in a dark place for up to a year before straining. It’s entirely up to you.

Hot Method, aka “Green Dragon”

Here are process details, references and rationalizations: (Source)

1. Chop the cannabis—more surface area gives means a faster and more efficient extraction. [You can literally chop it into a powder.]

2. Bake the cannabis (decarboxylate).
In whole-plant cannabis, THC content is expressed as THCA (tetrahydrocannabolic acid) prior to decarboxylation into THC, which takes place when cannabis is heated during cooking, and smoked or vaporized ingestion. THCA is a mild analgesic and anti-inflammatory but does not have good affinity with our CB1 receptors, so in order to make a THC-rich tincture that has many of the same therapeutic effects as smoked ingestion (including rapid absorption, quick relief and ease of self-titration), we must convert the THCA in the plant matter into THC prior to extracting it through an alcohol soak. (from Vancouver Island Compassion Society)

THC vaporizes at about 380°F. We want to heat the cannabis to convert THCA to THC, but keep the temperature under 380°F. That is why 325°F is used. Between four and five minutes your oven (and house) will start to smell very strong. This the time to remove the cannabis from the oven.

Notice also that there is considerable misinformation regarding heating the cannabis. It is true that you don’t have to heat it to extract both THC and THCA, but the amount of THC in whole plant preparations is relatively small compared to after decarboxylation of the THCA. So if you want to maximize the strength of your tincture you must heat the cannabis prior to extraction.

3. Use the highest proof alcohol available. In my area this was Bacardi 151. The more alcohol the more efficient the extraction will be.

4. Simmer the mixture.
This is one of the areas that seems to be most debated. Many recipes call for placing the cannabis (unbaked of course) into the alcohol and waiting 2 – 6 weeks. The main concern with heating the alcohol is that it is “explosive” (not exactly true…it is however flammable).

The purpose of the simmering is to heat the alcohol mixture to improve extraction rates and efficiencies. Heating during extraction increases the motion of the molecules (basic physics/chemistry) and drastically decreases extraction times. The boiling point of pure ethanol is 173°F (78°C). We will use the water bath to heat the rum/cannabis mixture to just below the boiling point of ethanol.

Heating the alcohol mixture can be done very safely using a hot water bath. You will need an accurate candy or quick read thermometer. Place about 1 inch of water in a wide, vertical-edged pan (9” wide x 3” high). Bring the water to a low simmer. The rum/cannabis mixture should be in a small (1 pint) mason jar. Do NOT cover the jar.

Put the thermometer into the mason jar and place into the simmering water bath. Bring the temperature of the rum/cannabis mixture to about 165°F (I maintain it between 150°F and 165°F). You want the alcohol mixture to be just barely moving (not boiling, but showing active convection within the mixture). If the mixture starts to bubble too much, just turn down the water bath.

You should have the oven fan on high. You will notice that any alcohol fumes are mixed with water vapor from the water bath and vented out the fan. This combined with the fact that you are trying not to boil the ethanol makes the process quite safe.

5. Strain, titrate, and store.
When you are finished with the extraction you will be left with about 1oz of green dragon tincture. Note that one ounce of the alcohol has evaporated.

Now you should test your eyedropper. In my test 34 full droppers equaled one ounce of liquid (this is a little less than one gram of liquid per dropper-ful as 29g equals 1ounce).

The liquid should be dark green and smell like cannabis.  1/8oz of good cannabis yields about 30-34 doses of tincture.

      • Just completed my first batch (cold method) which I initiated last week. Ironically, in that time frame, I also found I needed a PET scan, with results not yet in. Thus, my recreational efforts might be legitimized as medicinal, shortly. Administered dosage last night, with moderate results, and will continue experimenting.

I did, however, encounter one problem. While I wore rubber gloves while mixing and bottling, and protected my counters, I notice that this morning, my two, front lower teeth are stained green. (administerd under the tongue). What can be done about that? On the bright side, Sunday is St. Patrick’s Day, so I’ll smile a lot.

        • Be careful of what kind of gloves you use, as you don’t want the synthetic components of the gloves to dissolve in the medicine. Also be careful of using bare hands, and then adding a regular sized dose on top of the ‘dose’ you can get through your hands !! My wife really got ‘looped’ out doing this 🙂

          • Jim, I use a Shea Butter infused with cannabis and apply it topically for Peripheral Neuropathy pain relief on my legs and feet. There are days where I swear I get bombed on the cream. It’s so soothing and works well for me. A pal turned me on to a small bottle of tincture his disabled friend in Wash made for me. It works great for me. I’m looking to make my own and this looks like a foolproof method. I’ll have to use less cannabis and thus, less alcohol, because I cannot afford 3/4 of a jar of weed at a time, lol. But I think I can do this. Thanks for the info.

In this recipe he uses a blender to whip it (it glides on the skin much easier when whipped). I make smaller batches and whip it by hand as its cooling, using a whisk.

I’ve never heard whether indicator saliva works better for neuropathy, but you can’t wrong either way. If there’s a difference, u a gone it’s quite subtle and barely relevant.

In the sample recipe http://lifefromthegroundup.us/2014/01/homemade-body-butter/ just replace the coconut oil with oil infused with your medicine. There are recipes all over for “cannabis infused coconut oil”. Let us know if you have further questions.

    • Everyone Be Careful!!!! Most cannabis is treated with organophosphates! When the organophosphate residue simmers in the tincture alcohol, an ester is created and it is highly toxic to the human nervous system! Do not make cannabis tincture!!!

      Like

        • Please read about organophosphate toxicity and poisoning – almost all cannabis is treated with organophosphate during plant growth (organic or otherwise). This can seriously harm you when esters are formed by binding to the alcohol – alcohol draws out the toxins and holds them in your tincture. You can become paralyzed and die from this method, it is serious chemistry.

        • Organophosphate toxicity is not a concern with tinctures unless you got your reefer from an unreliable source. No grower I know uses chemical pesticides, at least not after it buds. Can’t say the same for the cartels, but I know of no one who has suffered. What is the name of the ester? This shows the importance of knowing your source, but should not keep you from making an alcohol tincture. It’s a lifesaver in many instances and is a much better solvent than glycerin any day of the week. Many modern dispensaries test their products for pesticides and they must be pesticide free.

Saying what you said means you do not have a fucking clue about your own immediate world.

Want to help in the future? Learn about YOUR environment, and take care of it. Go confront the indoor growers, and the ones growing outdoors w/chemicals, the ones diverting streams and dumping diesel fuel, and clearcutting. I lived in northern Cali — I KNOW what goes on there.

      • Thanks so much, i asked a scientist friend and he says:

Here is the story from Wikipedia:

When utilized in ‘tincture’ method extractions, specifically as a 10% solution, glycerol prevents tannins from precipitating in ethanol extracts of plants (tinctures). It is also used as an ‘alcohol-free’ alternative to ethanol as a solvent in preparing herbal extractions. It is less extractive when utilized in a standard tincture methodology. Glycerol is approximately 30% more slowly absorbed by the body resulting in a much lower glycemic load. Alcohol-based tinctures can also have the alcohol removed and replaced with glycerol for its preserving properties. Such products are not ‘alcohol-free’ in either a scientific or consumable sense, but should in all instances more accurately be referred to as “Alcohol-Removed” products. Fluid extract manufacturers often extract herbs in hot water before adding glycerin to make glycerites.[10][11]

When used as a primary ‘true’ alcohol-free (e.g. no alcohol (i.e. ethanol) ever being used) botanical extraction solvent in innovative non-tincture based ‘dynamic’ methodologies, glycerol has been shown to possess a high degree of extractive versatility for botanicals including removal of numerous constituents and complex compounds, with an extractive power that can rival that of alcohol and water/alcohol solutions. That glycerol possess such high extractive power assumes that glycerol, with its tri-atomic structure, is utilized with dynamic methodologies as opposed to standard passive ‘tincturing’ methodologies that are better suited to alcohol’s di-atomic structure. Glycerol possesses the intrinsic property of not denaturing or rendering a botanical’s constituents inert (as di-atomic alcohols – i.e. ethanolic (grain) alcohol, methanolic (wood) alcohol, etc., do). Glycerol is a stable preserving agent for botanical extracts that, when utilized in proper concentrations in an extraction solvent base, does not allow inverting or reduction-oxidation of a finished extract’s constituents, even over several years. Both glycerol and ethanol are viable preserving agents. Glycerol is bacteriostatic in its action, and ethanol is bactericidal in its action.[12][13][14]

Isn’t this great? Glycerol is just the perfect tincture medium for all the above reasons.

        Like

        • Does this mean that, with respect to organophosphate poisoning, glycerol is a safe alternative to using alcohol to make a cannibus tincture? How about using a commercial fruit and vegetable-washing product?

How did you ever manage to ask all of them if they use Organophosphates?

        • Water treat? Seriously? If organophospates are in weed, fruit, vegtables or herbs, you can’t wash them off. That is a systemic insecticide that is throughout the plant tissues and can not be removed. To the person that said it’s even in organic. Rediculous! Anything that is labeled as organic/certified is not allowed by law to use organophospates or any other synthetic insecticide. If you eat non organic food, your already eating this shite.

It is made by using a super solvent like ethanol or butane or naptha, etc. and a large amount of buds. The solvent is then evaporated off leaving a very concentrated oil. The oil is then ingested for the cancer treatment daily for 60-90 days. You won’t be able to function very well-like heavy narcotics. I prefer the all natural ethanol solvent. It can get expensive but probably not nearly as bas as chemo. If you want, I’ll dig up the link for you.

Hash oil is whole plant extract, is less potent, but has many beneficial contents like terpenoids. Either would be great cancer medicine, just take more hash oil to approximate the potency of RSO. ~Dennis

It can’t be done – pancreatitis is a hospital stay, generally 2 weeks if you’re lucky, a month if you’re unlucky and almost everyone with pancreatitis is unlucky! Chronic pancreatitis is a scourge that I wouldn’t wish on anyone – analgesics work somewhat but the side-effects with drugs such as Tramadol are worse than the pain (most of the time). Headaches, nausea and vomitting are the result of the pain meds. Tincture is the panacea of pain relief. No lung damage, no headache, no nausea, no vomiting, no hospital, no doctor, no unbelievably high medical bills to pay – just relief, pure blissful relief from pain! FYI – the cup of hot tea is an ideal conduit just be sure to add a dab of butter to the cup – just a little oil from butter will improve flavor and efficacy of delivery! In fact, you should add some butter – unsalted is the best – to your morning coffee too – boost the flavor, try it you’ll like it. As an aside, I’ve been living with chronic pancreatitis for 35 yrs., smoking herb for 40 yrs recreationally, now enjoying the fun as well as pain relief with the medical strains available today. Over those 35 yrs. I’ve experienced only 1 acute case of ‘gotta go to the hospital-type’ pancreatitis 14 yrs. ago and moderate pancreatitis since Apr. 2014 – moderate pancreatitis that didn’t turn into an acute case because you can heal your pancrease by severe restriction of diet and use of the mother of all nature’s creation: herb. Tincture is the way to go!

  11. well…the purpose of a tincture is to keep the dosing easy, small and indiscreet, so you wouldn’t want to add much. It also depends on whether you are using an alcohol or glycerin based tincture (which takes a little more volume per dose)
Personally, I love chocolate or any berry in an alcohol tincture, which is the only tincture I have experience with. If you can find some frozen berry concentrate, add a few drops, and adjust till it tastes like you want it to.
You might have to briefly blend it in a coffee grinder or small food processer to emulse them together.
Also remember that you will have to re-titrate after adding the flavor. How much more per dose you will want depends on the amount of flavoring you added.
Now that I am thinking about it…wouldn’t a few grains of sweetened Kool-Aid added to the tincture taste good?

  16. Would you say that the cold method is better for a CBD rich tincture and medicinal purposes and Hot method better for THC effects?

    Like

    • The article mentioned THCA & heating at 325, but other recipes and labs I have used recommend decarboxylating , heating the flower , at 200 for 60 min or so. That converts THCA to THC and CBDA to CBD. That is a simplistic explanation but the lab tests show it works.

I use that to create hot tinctures for CBD rich cannabis, but it should be just as effective for any type.

There are many discussions of decarboxylation of cannabis, just Google.

    • In addition, I believe partially cover the jar with aluminum foil, maybe 2/3 of the top. That allows vapors to escape but not too quickly. The goal is to extract the chemicals from the cannabis, not to evaporate the alcohol. The longer the process takes, the more is extracted.

Decarboxing ( abbreviation ) & a slow extract create a smoother tasting tincture as well, in my opinion. The strong alcohol still burns the mouth, no cure for that. One lab said the glycerin extracts it has tested are all much lower in THC/CBD than alcohol extracts. I haven’t experimented with that yet.

More than that, I have found, the act of caring for, planning the various stages of, and harvesting a strain which took great care in every stage and a fair amount of research to get you there is not only rewarding, but therapeutic. Growing your own supply is more than just putting a street dealer out of business, it is a chance for someone to care for another life-form and to grow as a person in the process. Its a beautiful thing.

Also, after the water bath, the tinctures is ready after strained? So it takes less than an hour to make as opposed to 2 weeks? I also heard of a freezer way to make tinctures. Do you know about this?

yes, the hot method takes less than an hour – but you pay in terms of quality and taste. for someone who’s run out of medicine though, this is the best option.

i know nothing about the water bath, sorry. and i don’t remember about whether it’s good to activate the THC before the hot water method, it’s literally been years since i looked into this.

    • Rick Simpson makes his oil by evaporating off all of the solvent: before this point, he adds a few drops of water, to prevent the oil hardening (the solvent will evaporate off before the water does).

      http://www.phoenixtearsmovie.com/

You would have to stop the evaporation process well before this point, so that you end up with cannabis oil in an alcohol solution; and would probably have to use your judgement to determine when it had reached the right concentration.
Personally, as alcohol is a poison, I would tend to take it to the stage where it had just assumed slight viscosity. You could see this by dipping it with a table knife, for instance.

  25. I use the freezer method all the time and am quite pleased with the results. I can have a full bodied concentrated ethanol tincture in about a day and a half total. I use an ounce per pint of Everclear. Once the Green/Gold Dragon is finished, it can be used to transfer the thc to other mediums such as glycerin, honey, oils and such and is called a solvent transfer. You’re able to make basically any potency you need or want.

    • The cannabinoids in cannabis are the ‘medicine’, they are the constituents that contain pain relieving properties. Those cannabinoids may be administered by smoking, or ingesting in food or tincture. A google search will help you to find out more about how you can make your own – if you’re in a state where it’s legal – and you can also go to the local dispensary and inquire further. We obviously can’t recommend anything that would break the law. Tincture is not difficult to make. Some bodies respond better to cannabis oil or butter, and some respond well to tincture. Either way, you are getting the pain relieving medicine.

We wish you the best of luck and Healing & would love to hear about your experiences after you try the herbal tincture!

  30. Good luck holding it under your tongue for more than a few seconds. It burns a lot and will cause your salivary glands to quickly dilute it, which in turn will cause you to swallow. If you flavor your tincture first it will help. If I’m going sublingual, I have a drink handy to put out the fire. If it doesn’t burn, it’s not very strong. You can do it, but you’ve got to be tough. It’s just as easy to put it in a shot of water or other liquid and shoot it down. Or in your soda, coffee or energy drink.

  31. I find it works great in tea of coffee but I would like to have the effect faster. I think you almost have to have it half and half with water otherwise it burns.

      • You can flavor it and that will help with the burn. I know a lot of people who use it sublingually but you have to be tough. Keep a drink handy so that you can put out the fire, so to speak. If you transfer the thc to honey or glycerin, it is still sublingual quality but tastes a hell of a lot better.

The first two days it didn’t seem to have any effect on her. The third day I suggested having something oily/greasy in her stomach. She ate some nuts and she felt it. It put her to sleep for a few hours. The next day she lowered the dosage.

She has been using the tincture for almost a week. Then two days ago she said the tumor under arm started to swell. She stopped the tincture. Yesterday she laid of the tincture and she thinks the tumor may have gone down.

She wants me to find out if this is expected/wanted/not related to the tincture.

Does anyone know if using this treatment would cause the tumor to swell at the beginning of treatment? Or is it just doing what tumors do?

    Any pointers are greatly appreciated,

Although cannabis is a nontoxic substance and has a proven track record of safety with children and babies, personally, I would consult a knowledgeable doctor, I just like to play it safe. Plus, you can get advice on what form is best, whether its a cookie or some oil. And advice on dosing and titration. Dr Fankl knows a lot about CBD, and perhaps your child could be helped by a non-THC, CBD-rich form of the medicine. From there, you can obtain a license and buy your medicine at a dispensary.

On the right side of his blog, at top, you’ll see our most popular posts – check out the “24 year old” and “biochemist” posts, and let us know if you’ve got any questions.

If mom wants to also put it on topically (takes pain away and also helps kill cancer, but you need to ingest it too) she would have no trouble with the regular THC version, is it won’t get her high.

      • Hi Christina and Jim,
Very simple recipe: I take a cup or two of Nutiva Organic Coconut Oil ($22 at Costco for 2 quarts/14oz), melt it in a saucepan, and then add a cup or two of dried trim – I usually put some bud in also to strengthen the potency. The measurements aren’t exact – I want to make sure there is enough liquid oil to have the cannabis happily swim around. Don’t boil – simmer for half hour/hour. Then I take buttercloth (washable cheesecloth), put it in a strainer over a bowl, and let it drip thru and when it’s cool enough, squeeze out the cloth to get out the last bit of liquid. Then I pour the liquid into whatever container/s I’ll be using – it will take a bunch of hours for it to firm up. And if the temp in the room is warm, the mixture will liquify – if cool, it hardens. Rather than have it melt and harden over and over again, I keep it in a cool place in the kitchen so that it is salve texture all the time. That’s it. In addition to my using it [aside: my neuropathy was so bad during the day and pain so sharp that it would wake me throughout the night – I was prescribed meds – neurontin, lyrica – that just made me stupid – and stopped those, and have had no pain since I began using the salve.] I use it in the a.m. before I put my socks on. Initially I used it both a.m. and before bed – I’d apply it and then put on ‘sleep socks’. Now I use it just a.m. And I named it: ‘Raqui’s Owie Be Gone’. Slick, eh? Any questions, feel free to email me: ‘raquibirdco@gmail.com’ Good luck with it! I hope this helps.

  53. Great post. Thank you. The pesticide issue looks like a real thing which should be addressed, but doesn’t reflect on the ‘danger’ of making tinctures themselves. Wondering if the ‘danger danger’ vibe is not some corporate troll. Tincture is so easy, and so effective, when it comes to cannabis, it is a natural competitor to sativex spray slick pharma stuff. I’m always surprised when I hear about people using chems on cannabis, being a loner bumpkin and not ever thinking of growing my plants other than naturally. They seem pretty hardy, only need a little help with mold, but there are plenty of ways to combat mold without resorting to toxic chem sludge dna-mutilation sauce… Oh but silly me, I thought cannabis was an herb, and herbalism was inherently ‘organic’!

Anyhooo: another easy and foolproof ways of preserving the herb in an edible and spreadable form is to make a coconut oil salve/butter. Unlike olive oil, virgin coconut oil seems to never to go rancid. At room temperature it is solid like a salve, and when warmed, turns to a viscous oil. It has a more neutral odor than olive oil, and goes well with chocolate, another therapeutic herb many of us cannot do without! The resulting oil can be used in cooking, baking, spreading on toast, for skin care, massage. Remember: our skin is our biggest organ, and it is covered with pores. Great way to ‘consume’ your medicine…

I usually just make it in a double boiler on low until the smell is right and the color is dark green.

Coconut is a supermamamedicine plant in its own rights: antibacterial, antifungal, essential fats, anti-inflammatory, etc…

I heat chronic to 180 degrees for 20 minutes – (200 degrees was too warm, leaving residue on my glass plate). Then I alcohol extract (everclear, 95%) and after a week concentrate to 1/4 of the amount filtered through a few layers of cheesecloth.. 1 dry ounce of chronic gives me 1 fluid ounce of tincture. I hope this helps. It is the recipe that works for us.

BTW, a Glycerol extraction at 375 F makes liquid ‘vape’.
3.2 grams dried Sour Diesel, 1.25 fl. oz. vegetable glycerol.
Heat glycerol to 375 F, stir in small amounts of dried powdered herb until all mixed in. Will foam up, so add in small amounts. Cook at temp for 5 minutes, some bubbling will occur.
Stop cooking when herbals are dark brown.
Strain WHILE STILL HOT through 70 micron stainless steel mesh, allow to cool.
Result is amber-brown while hot, on cooling becomes cloudy orange/brown. Smells/tastes FanTuckingFastic.
    Much thicker that original glycerol.
Under 250x magnification, tincture is featureless ‘milky’ in appearance.
    Possibly a Clathrate?
BTW, dissolves completely in cold water. Milky looking, but no settling out after 8 hours in refrigerator.
    Hemp Lemonade, anyone?

Alcohol (everclear 190 proof) for a week on chronic, then put through a coffee filter, evaporate 50% of the alcohol and administer sublingually. The alcohol flash point is very low so don’t work with it around an open flame.

  69. Good afternoon,
I recently was having severe back pain, as I have suffered Chronic Back pain as a result of a Spinal Fusion.
A neighbor provided me with a cup of tea, it helped my pain immensly!!!!
My concern was when I asked her what kind of tea it was, she replied Pimmagranite tea and a tincture of marijuana in it. I was upset, not because it worked, but because I am an RN and also in Pain Management where I am drug tested with a urine test when I see my pain management provider.
If I test Positive for THC, I will be terminated from Pain Management AND the Nursing Board will be notified of my urine test.
How long does the THC remain in my urine after drinking this tea mixed with a Tincture of Marijuana.
There is NO DOUBT that I received relief for my Chronic Back pain and Arthritus pain, but I am not in a position of understanding providers nor a State Board of Nursing. Can you please advise?

    • I found this:

Marijuana has a half-life in your system. How long it takes to leave your system depends on how much you smoke. But the time maxes out at around 45 days. One smoking session for someone with a clean system takes about 3-4 days to be clean. Smoke 2 days later and then have to wait about a week, and so on. The time it will take roughly doubles every time you smoke until it maxes at about 45 days to be clean. So if you are maxed out and you wait about 2 weeks and then smoke again, you’re basically back to 45 days.
Marijuana can be detected in urine for nearly a week after smoking. Blood tests can be more accurate, and it might take a month to be totally clear. Hair tests show every drug ever taken when that hair was growing – this is why you see so many drug addicts with shaved heads or buzz cuts, by the way. Also by the way: taking laxatives and drinking wacky chemicals won’t “cheat” a drug test. It will just make you go to the bathroom! These drug tests are designed by experts who anticipate what the drug user might do.

Be very careful of “remedies” for getting around drug tests. They flat out do not work and could do damage to your body.

At first I did`nt know what to do with the buds ,I can`t smoke them because they made me cough . I googled all I could to find about edible cannabis and started making tincture ,with great results ,the markers are going down and down . The dr.stopped prescribing cancer drugs which did`nt help and just made me feel sick and misserable and said I should just use the cannabis . After seeing the video about a safe way to make oil I decided to make it. At the dispensary I was told that I can`t get it here ( I live in Israel )
My question Is : Can I use different strains together to make the oil .One sativa high THC and one indica with just CBD and less then 1% THC.

  75. Are the medicinal effects of a high CBD tincture made from industrial hemp with no THC, not a Schedule 1 drug, different than than a tincture made from marijuana? What is the recommended milligrams of CBD for one to purchase for of a tincture of industrial hemp were one to not want to get high, as it’s the THC that’s in marijuana (cannabis) that gets on high. Cannabis tinctures made from industrial hemp are being sold on the Internet, but I have no idea if the tinctures work and what patients are saying about cannabis tinctures made from industrial hemp that contains high CBD and no THC. There are many people who are either uninformed or misinformed as to whether to buy industrial hemp tinctures or other products that contain high CBD and no THC. I’m elderly and have rhumatiod arthritis and a friend gave me a tincture made from marijuana and it worked to relieve pain but it also got me high and I don’t want to be high. I only want the relief from pain and don’t want to take a tincture of medicinal marijuana as there’s always a trace of THC in medical marijuana with a high concentration of CBD, thus making medical marijuana a Schedule 1 drug, as contrasted with a tincture of high CBD made from industrial hemp. Both the industrial hemp and marijuana are cannabis but only one is legal to sell and legal to purchase, the one made from industrial hemp. Now I want to know if it’s worth purchasing a tincture of high CBD made from industrial hemp or is it better to purchase a tincture made from medical marijuana. The answer to this question is crucial for those who don’t want to got high, and only want pain relief or muscle relaxation. Thank you.

There is NO chemical structure that is indica or sativa. Cannabis is biphasic it both energizes and relaxes. Usually the first effects are energizing, later the relaxation kicks in. It first kills your appitite then later it gives you the munchies. Low doses can have the opposite effect of a high dose. The so called couchlock is nothing more than you smoked too much just like drinking too much.

Yes it is expensive, but probably less expensive than traditional medical strategies. Given the recent growth of the industry, I’m hoping prices will come down. Like

  92. Decarboxylation can be a gradual process. Some decarboxylation occurs just in drying. More takes place in heating. Full decarboxylation occurs heating the cannabis/solvent to 240º F. for an hour. If you do this, the THC is decarboxylated; that is, has shaken off the CO2 carboxyl group that keeps THCA from awakening the cannabinoid receptor CB1. ~Dennis

  96. Has anyone else tried the water bath method with a mason jar? Bc they are not oven-safe, nor are they safe for use in a water bath…I absentmindedly followed these instructions and as soon as I placed the jar containing ground-up cannabis & alcohol in the 150 degree water bath the bottom of the jar popped off causing its contents to fall out into the water and leaving me with a useless tube of glass that used to be my favorite mason jar. :[ I realized the blip in my critical thinking because, seriously, how could I not have realized the jar would have to be oven safe 😐 SO the moral of the story is, use an oven safe glass container if you so choose to do a water bath.
However, I don’t think the water bath is even necessary…
Once my canna-alcohol mixture was inextricably mixed in with the water, I fished out the glass bottom of the mason jar and decided to just cut my losses and make a watered down tincture instead. So I monitored the temp of the mixture, keeping it around 160-165 degrees for 40 minutes (I doubled the time since there was quite a bit of water in it) and made sure the fan over my stove was on the whole time. Perhaps the water in the mixture made it safer to directly heat up the alcohol but I have a feeling a water bath is redundant since either way the alcohol is being heated up in its container to 150-165 degrees….just be careful to monitor the temp.
Lastly, these instructions for the Green Dragon method say you need to decarboxylate the cannabis via the oven method and then do it again in the water bath…isn’t this also redundant?
Once I try and titrate my tincture I’ll report back with it’s results in the name of bolstering internet-based experimentation & research :] lol because seriously this is my first time making a canna-tincture and the amount of conflicting advice on how to make them is overly abundant

      • Most of the literature on PTSD and cannabis cite THC as most neuroprotective and most effective in PTSD. But you do not want the mental effects of THC. We know that CBD is highly beneficial, and it does inhibit the mental effects of THC, in the right proportion. You could try a high CBD mix with THC, where CBD is 60% or greater. This gives you both the benefits of CBD as well as the therapeutic THC without the buzz.

  105. I grow my own high THC plants (and take a capsule of CBD every day so I don’t worry about the balance with THC). I cure and decarboxylate in the oven at 200 degrees for as long as it takes to dry the plant material.

I grind that up in a food processor, place it in a Mason jar and cover with GemClear, a cheaper alternative to EverClear. If you frequent a particular liquor store, they may get it in just for you and others like you. Fortunately for me, my liquor store owner is also a mmj patient.

I let it macerate for at least a week, strain out the plant material with a coffee filter in a metal strainer and then heat it at a low temperature on my ceramic cook top until it doesn’t bubble anymore. I pour that into a brown glass bottle with eye dropper. I take my tincture before bed for pain relief and insomnia. It lasts 2-3 hours before I awake and take another dose. I have to get up to pee anyway, so my rhythm has adapted to take another dose at that time.

When I have another plant ready, I often add it to the previous mixture, having added more GemClear to the remaining plant material from the time before. When I feel it’s given me all it can, I compost the plant material along with my coffee grounds and tea leaves.

I have multiple health issues and cannabis addresses most of them. I just wish the research were being done (in the US) on what and how the other cannabinoids do. It seems the only honest countries, doing this important research, are Israel and Spain.

Check out youtube: search for “cannabis research Spain” and/or “cannabis research Israel” or “cannabis research Rafael Mecheulam.” Mecheulam is in clinical trials (human subjects) using the cannabinoid 8-AG (or is it AG-8?) for mending broken bones and preventing/treating osteoporosis. Dr. Sanchez and Guzman of Spain have shown how cannabis kills cancer in half a dozen ways, so far only in rodents with cancer and human cancer cells in the lab. But there are many anecdotes from patients, who have been told by oncology to go home and prepare to die, who have taken high concentrations of cannabis oil and have beaten their cancers.

We need the research to tell us what the effective dosage should be, for all the symptoms that cannabis defeats or treats.

    • I don’t know. But my kneejerk reaction would be to recommend NOT tinctures, but an oil based cannabis concoction (or “edibles”). I believe cannabis can help your pain, and I do understand not wanting to feel high.

Here’s what I would say: go to a dispensary and get a CBD-only as well as 1/2 CBD, 1/2 THC cannabis oil. It will probably be a coconut oil, but if they only have butter that’s fine too.

Take it before bed. If the THC-containing oil makes you high, you’ll be sleeping through it, and will wake up able to function (esp. after you have your coffee).

You can take the CBD-only oil during the day. I’m just not sure how effective it will be for pain. The science thus far shows that THC is the real powerhouse for all types of pain. But I’m not sure how much science there is to support this same effect from CBD.

One thing to note is that CBD does “mellow” the “high” from THC, that is why i recommend going for 1/2 and 1/2 – even though it contains THC, it won’t make you feel as high as the cannabis we’re used to smoking, whihc is bred to be very high in THC and sometimes contains almost no CBD 😦

  109. How to sensibly buy LEGAL cbd oil? Because I got a letter saying customs has confiscated my package two times already and I’m pissed.

  110. You can buy it legally on Amazon and other sites, as HEMP oil. CBD is the same whether it comes from cannabis or hemp. I prefer the brands originating in Canada, as in Manitoba Harvest. I avoid any that may have come from China.

    • Hi Patricia, do you have any marijuana dispensaries near you? They would have it! You might consider trying oil-based cannabis too, some find it more potent and effective than tincture.
