CNN: Dr. Sanja Gupta: Cannabis versus Cancer (Disinfo Alert)

Dr Gupta, cherry-picking the science is not a good way to restore lost credibility.

Note: overall, the news that Sanjay Gupta has come out in favor of cannabis is a giant leap forward for all of us. While I am celebrating this breakthrough, I feel compelled to note certain things along the way. THC’s ability to heal a deadly disease is nothing to whitewash or ignore, so please excuse me if I sound rude, but I won’t be silent about this.

Why Gupta is now spreading more misinformation, in this case by what is not said, is unknown, but one could assume that the eventual goal of demonizing/minimizing the beneficial effects of THC, whilst hailing the “non-psychoactive” CBD, is to sell you pills, rather than allow you to think you can grow your own cancer cure. (If he didn’t apologize for misleading us, and appear to now be on the side of science, he could no longer be used to spread disinformation.)

I cannot believe that Sanjay, after an entire year of research, could have missed stuff like this:

Cristina Sanchez, a young biologist at Complutense University in Madrid, was studying cell metabolism when she noticed something peculiar. She had been screening brain cancer cells because they grow faster than normal cell lines and thus are useful for research purposes. But the cancer cells died each time they were exposed to tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the principal psychoactive ingredient of marijuana.

Instead of gaining insight into how cells function, Sanchez had stumbled upon the anti-cancer properties of THC. In 1998, she reported in a European biochemistry journal that THC “induces apoptosis [cell death] in C6 glioma cells,” an aggressive form of brain cancer.

Subsequent peer-reviewed studies in several countries would show that THC and other marijuana-derived compounds, known as “cannabinoids,” are effective not only for cancer-symptom management (nausea, pain, loss of appetite, fatigue), they also confer a direct antitumoral effect.

A team of Spanish scientists led by Manuel Guzman conducted the first clinical trial assessing the antitumoral action of THC on human beings. Guzman administered pure THC via a catheter into the tumors of nine hospitalized patients with glioblastoma, who had failed to respond to standard brain-cancer therapies. The results were published in 2006 in the British Journal of Pharmacology: THC treatment was associated with significantly reduced tumor cell proliferation in every test subject.

Around the same time, Harvard University scientists reported that THC slows tumor growth in common lung cancer and “significantly reduces the ability of the cancer to spread.” What’s more, like a heat-seeking missile, THC selectively targets and destroys tumor cells while leaving healthy cells unscathed. Conventional chemotherapy drugs, by contrast, are highly toxic; they indiscriminately damage the brain and body. SOURCE

Further, there is a subtle demonizing of the euphoric effects of THC, headed by Dr Sanjay Gupta. This is unfounded and more reefer madness. Per Harvard’s Dr Lester Grinspoon:

As for getting high, I am not convinced that the therapeutic benefits of cannabis can always be separated from its psychoactive effects. For example, many patients with multiple sclerosis who use marijuana speak of “feeling better” as well as of the relief from muscle spasms and other symptoms. If cannabis contributes to this mood elevation, should patients be deprived of it?

  1. I disagree with your latest posting about Sanja Gupta. He made a mistake and is admitting that. Watch Sunday AND THEN MAKE AN ASSESSMENT….NOT BEFORE THE BROADCAST.
If you still disagree with him, fine. But to condemn before you even know what he is going to say is disingenuous, to say the least.

    • This is one in a series of interviews with Gupta where he minimizes THC, does not mention the science showing its effects on cancer cells, yet hails CBD for its ability to do the same. Why would he wait until Sunday to mention THC’s ability to kill cancer cells? If he does, I will eat crow, and I will enjoy it, promise!

  2. No matter what else, Sanjay Gupta commands a very large conservative audience in the US, and the overwhelming message they will take from this is that marijuana is not as bad as they have been brainwashed into believing, and it should be legal for medicinal use at the very least.
I take that as a huge win, no matter how you spin it!

    • I agree. While I feel a strong need to point certain things out in the interest of being discerning, I am celebrating this wonderful new era – with Gupta essentially giving the green light, we are very, very close to full legalization, let alone legal medicine. The benefits of that are simply incalculable.

I just want to put the brakes on if this movement starts to veer toward separating cannabinoids into pharmaceutical preparations, and claiming the Big Pharma version is better than whole plant (read: free, safe) medicine. This is why demonizing and, in effect, lying (by omission) about THC gives me pause. If Gupta is saying he has now done his research, and is disseminating it to us, I simply cannot imagine how the science around THC escaped him, or why he wouldn’t mention it. It does little to inspire trust.

Still, this is a net positive and true reason to be very happy for the future of humanity!!!

  3. These government mouthpieces aren’t dumber than this redneck. They knew all along that the issue was a bald faced lie (and this includes Gupta.

Simply put, one cannot trust the government or its lick-spittle media clowns to give us the entire truth. It will pick and choose the facts to present with a goal in mind.

I have to agree with the opinionist who posted this. There is something else up. And I tend to agree with the pharma-takeover aspect.

    But we will see.

I do believe that the laws are relaxing on a state level, perhaps forcing the Feds to backtrack now. But to me, it is protecting Big Med’s money-making by making pills out of nature’s medicine.

    • I noted more on this here https://patients4medicalmarijuana.wordpress.com/2013/07/23/katie-couric-show-on-marijuana-moms/

He is saying false things about THC while pimping CBD – this is clearly a move toward pills. Today there was another segment in his CNN half hour show where he fear-mongered over the new high THC strains, and interviewed someone who had written a book, but had no further credentials, who said maybe it could be more addictive, and that it was dangerous. He also interviewed someone who grows and tests pot for the government, who said the higher THC content was very dangerous. Gupta didn’t cross reference this, or give us science, he just left it at that.

I think with states fully legalizing, and the science in their faces, anyone who wanted to still be taken seriously has to come out in favor of cannabis. All he is doing is saving face, but he is spreading hardcore reefer madness at he same time – about a chemical that can heal like no other – I could imagine that the cancer industry is behind demonizing THC, their mortal enemy!

  4. Don’t trust this “confession”, since he was such a shill for big Pharma, I’m thinking that they are ready to roll out some cannabis related drugs. And since there is a U.S. patent on cannabis, it seems that the timing is right.

  5. I just stumbled upon your article here and thoroughly enjoyed it but I don’t see on your source for this statement, “The results were published in 2006 in the British Journal of Pharmacology: THC treatment was associated with significantly reduced tumor cell proliferation in every test subject.” The hyperlink article states at the end 2 of 9 patients saw relief, I was wondering where in the study it stated all patients found relief?
    Thanks for the clarification.

  6. Full plant or nothing!
I have used Rick Simpson Oil home made of organic homegrown SATIVAS to reverse last stage, ” seek hospice” Melanoma.
When I was unable to grow I used a CBD only oil THAT DID NOTHING TO ABATE SYMPTOMS OR REDUCE TUMORS!
I don’t even like to use “high CBD strains.
It DOES NOT WORK AS WELL AS WHOLE PLANT! EVEN IF YOU JUICE WHOLE PLANT RAW, YOU HAVE BETTER RESULTS WITH WHOLE PLANT!
