In Progressives Should Just Say No to Legalizing Drugs (US News), Carrie Wofford writes, “There’s a good reason drugs are illegal: They’re dangerous”.

She explains:

Drugs kill. They turn talented, intelligent people into impulsive animals. They destroy marriages. They deprive children of emotionally healthy parents. There’s a good reason drugs are illegal: They’re dangerous. Products that kill do not belong on drugstore shelves.

After reminding the reader of Philip Seymour Hoffman’s tragic overdose (whose heroin addiction was the result of legal drugs prescribed to him for pain), Wofford brings Cannabis into the argument by citing its deleterious effects on brain tissue:

With more states opting to legalize the sale of medical marijuana, researchers are taking a closer look at the use of cannabis to treat chronic illnesses.

Dr. Manny Alvarez, senior managing health editor of FoxNews.com, recently sat down with the Medicine Hunter, Chris Kilham, to find out how it’s being studied.

Petition to Reschedule ‘Marijuana’ to Recognize Medical Benefits in Final Stages of Review by DEA

As scientists and researchers from Israel, Brazil, Canada and the US participate in the Sixth National Clinical Conference on Cannabis Therapeutics, a coalition of medical marijuana advocates is calling on the Obama administration for prompt action on an eight-year-old petition to reschedule marijuana for medical use.  The petition, filed in 2002, argues that marijuana should be classified as a drug with “accepted medical use” based on growing scientific evidence and acceptance in state law.  Since the petition was filed, even more scientific studies and state laws have recognized the medical efficacy of marijuana.
